Retro Weekends – Monster Party

Memorable Music

The music of Monster Party had much variety to it. The game was still a something of a parody of horror games, so it left room for the composer to throw in something outside of the game’s atmosphere.

Dancing Zombies
Composer: Takahiro Wakuta

This song will forever haunt my gamer subconscious. The ultimate pacifist theme, this played during the Dancing Zombie boss fight. Read the last memorable moment above to see my reaction to fighting this boss. Seeing that these are dancing zombies, it’s pretty obvious what this game was referencing, even though there’s a severe lack of “SHAMON!” in the song.

Round 3 Theme
Composer: Takahiro Wakuta

This is a very nice song and accentuates the atmosphere of the stage more than the other songs in the game. This plays in the forest/cave looking stage with the skeletons and umbrella bats. The song makes excellent use of the note echo effect for the main melody. It’s kind of a shame the this song, like the rest of the soundtrack, has such short composition before looping.

Round 5 Theme
Composer: Takahiro Wakuta

This is the most out of place song in the whole game. The river itself is the most out of place stage in the game. Combine this with the boss room theme and the stage after this one, you’d think this stage and song’s existence is simply there to mess with you. Strangely this song sounds a bit like the password theme.

Monster Party is a quirky romp for anyone wanting to play something off the beaten path. The story is nonsensical, the stages strange, and the bosses hysterical. The gameplay is a bit touchy playing as Mark, though playing as Bert more than makes up for it. It’s unknown why this game didn’t come out in Japan. Much like the bonkers gameplay, the mystery behind the development of this game is just as intriguing. Just don’t expect to see the bosses on the game cover anytime soon.
