Memorable Music
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 – Emerald Hill Zone Composed by Masato NakamuraAfter hearing Green Hill, Marble, Spring Yeard, and Labyrinth for the umpteenth time, it was a breath of fresh air to hear something new. Emerald Hill’s theme was much more energetic than Green Hill, and it felt, well, new! Sonic Team was still sticking to its instruments for this one, reusing Sonic 1’s instruments for this game. Both this and Green Hill Zone would become classics amongst Sonic fans.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 – Chemical Plant Zone Composed by Masato NakamuraWhile Mega Mack scared the shit outta me, I just couldn’t hate on Chemical Plant’s theme. Much product of the 90s, this was hip as all hell. The way the song started with that splash screen, “Chemical Plant Act 1,” It was like the game was going, “That was the tutorial. Now it’s time to get serious.” And that chorus man, such an awesome call and response. You probably had to imagine my reaction when I found out about Chemical Plant being in Sonic Generations knowing this was getting remixed. This stands as one of my favorite songs in the Sonic series.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Hill Top Zone Composed by Masato NakamuraI want to hate this stage and this song. But it’s just so damn catchy! From that siren like note in the beginning, to that kick ass bass, to that organ in the background, to the call and response with the main instrument and second instrument. You just find yourself bobbing your head to the carefree beat.
After Sonic 2’s release, SEGA would further its lead in the bit wars and solidified itself as the older and hip alternative to the SNES. Were it not for SEGA’s ventures into the CD and 32X, it might’ve kept that lead. Regardless, Sonic 2 would be remembered for adding so much more to the table in the Sonic series. More stages, a sidekick, the Spin Dash, Super Sonic, awesome music, etc. It garnered so much love from the fans over the years, they tried making an HD version of the game (which was later scrapped after some internal drama). Sonic Generations would see Chemical Plant and Sonic 2’s Final Boss make an appearance. Sonic 2 would go on to join the ranks of sequels that far outshined their originals.
