If you thought Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem was a weird crossover, then get a load of this. With the premier of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in Japan close as hand, Nintendo and Hasbro announced that they’ll be partnering up to create a crossover game, tentatively titled Kirby X My Little Pony. While development is still in its early stages, Nintendo was willing to share some info regarding how the story will pan out and how the game will play.
First the story goes like this. One day Kirby is walking along the grassy plains of Green Greens, enjoying the sights and sounds of nature and prepping a picnic for King Dedede, Waddle Dee, and Meta Knight. All of a sudden the sky goes dark, as if night-time has come. The image of a tall, dark alicorn can be seen, transitioning the land from day to night. Storm clouds begin to form, followed by a violent thunderstorm and a tornado, which sucks up Kirby into the sky. “The Night… will last… FOREVER!” is all Kirby hears before going unconscious.
From Twilight Sparkle’s point of view, she’s eyes deep into another book reading session. However she once again looks up the legend of Nightmare Moon, wondering if it’s possible that Princess Luna’s transformation into Nightmare Moon was indeed just a transformation, or if the entity can exist on its own (think Nightmare and Siegfried from Soul Calibur). Just as she turns another page, all of Ponyville (and seemingly all of Equestria) falls into a sudden darkness. Twilight wonders if it’s Cloudsdale acting up, but this seems to be the work of something sinister. Twilight notices a strange figure up in the sky with big eyes, a two-colored jester-like hat, and diamonds for wings. Just before she warns the others, a blinding light engulfs Ponyville.
Kirby and Twilight awaken next to each other, startling each other in the process. What is this pink puff ball? Who is this purple pony?
Little is known about how the game will play since it’s still in its early stages. But so far Hal Laboratories, the developers of the Kirby series, will be handling development of Kirby X My Little Pony. Shinya Kumazaki, the Director of Kirby’s Return to Dreamland, will be reprising his role for this game. He states that Kirby will play just as he did in Return to Dreamland. When asked about how Twilight will play, he said, “mostly the same. Instead of eating enemies and stealing their powers, she’ll use her magic to pick up enemies over her head. She’ll sap away their abilities with her magic as well and use them, similar to Kirby” The enemies will be a mix of mooks from the Kirby Series and the mythological creatures from the Friendship is Magic tv show.
So the game will feature Kirby and Twilight Sparkle as playable characters. What about beyond that? Kumazaki laughed, “well, we can’t say anything just yet. For now, just expect the Wispy Woods battle to be a lot more different.”
Kirby X My Little Pony is scheduled to release on the Wii U and 3DS and are aiming for an April 1st, 2014 release date.
