EA Senior Engineer Takes To Twitter, Calls Wii U “Crap”

Bob Summerwill tweetTwitter, Twitter, Twitter. Once again the micro-blogging platform rears its ugly head, potentially putting someone’s career on the line. EA Senior Engineer Bob Summerwill took to Twitter today to start a little mini rant against the Wii U. Speaking to Scott Hanselman, who simply asked a question, Summerwill took this opportunity to vent about some of the Wii U’s shortcomings, namely the lack of games on the console since the beginning of this year (though that could change). He kicked off his tirade with “The Wii U is crap. Less powerful than an Xbox 360, poor online/store. Weird tablet. Nintendo are walking dead at this point.” The tweets have since been deleted. But IGN has screencaps of them for the public to see.

John Riccitiello No Longer CEO Of EA

Riccitiello quitsFresh off of a disastrous launch of the newest SimCity, John Riccitiello did what many higher-ups do when something very embarrassing and damaging happens. He quit. Riccitiello took over EA in 2007, and upon joining recognized how predatory the company was before he took over, namely during the 6th generation when EA would simply buy up companies left and right and close them soon afterwards in hopes of not having to compete. In a sense, he helped EA turn a new leaf in the beginning of this generation, ushering in new IPs and taking risks that the gave company investors routine heart attacks. DICE and Visceral Games (then EA Redwood Shores) made Mirror’s Edge and Dead Space, new IP for the company. They helped out Harmonix with ditributing Rock Band and Double Fine with Brutal Legend. EA partners gave smaller devs a chance to be published by a big company without the risk of being absorbed or getting their IP taken. All was good, and I forgave EA for its crimes in the 6th generation. I was liking this new CEO.

Mass Effect 3 On Wii U To Get Interactive Comic For First Two Games, All DLC Included

Ever since the reveal of Mass Effect 3 for the Wii U, one thing that bugged me was how exactly anyone playing the Wii U version would be able to make any previous decisions really matter. The Mass Effect games are well known for having the choices you made in the previous incarnations carry over to the next game, whether by making something different or your choices being referenced by the characters. Well, EA is looking to alleviate the omission of the first two ME games by giving you an interactive comic, Mass Effect Genesis. This time it will detail the events of the first two games, similar to how the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 handled the first game. Still, would it kill EA to just release that newly announced Mass Effect Trilogy compilation on the Wii U and be done with it.

Along with this, the Wii U version of Mass Effect 3 will come with all the released so far for the game already included and ready to play. This includes From Ashes, the Extended Cut, all the multiplayer packs (Rebellion, Resurgence, and Earth). No word on the Leviathan chapter, but since it just came out, it’s probably not getting included. So far this looks like a good deal if you’re planning on getting a Wii U but haven’t played Mass Effect 3 yet.

Ain’t No Love Lost Between Oddworld Inhabitants Founder And EA

In an interview with GamesIndustry International, Oddworld Inhabitants founder Lorne Lanning dished some dirt about his company’s fall after the release of Stranger’s Wrath, and the poor marketing and business choices made by the game’s publisher, EA. In the interview, he mentions how the money made on games EA publishes don’t go back to making more games and funding developers. “Our agreement is, you won’t be seeing our profit being spent on Ferraris and shit like that… Our profits are going back into games so we can ultimately raise to the point where we can grow our audience…” He went on to state, “The owners [EA] are flying jets, do you think they care about the customers just one fucking per cent? Not at all.”

DICE Executive Producer Still Has Hope On A New Mirror’s Edge Game

Oh Mirror’s Edge. The game that introduced me to the “next generation.” DICE Executive Producer Patrick Bach stated in an interview with IGN that there’s still a possibility that a new Mirror’s Edge and Battlefield: Bad Company game could still be made. He stated that, “Mirror’s Edge was a game we all loved. Of course it had flaws, like all games. But in general it’s an IP we love. We haven’t killed it ’cause it’s too good to kill.” Of course when you have an idea like Mirror’s Edge, a First-Person Platformer with a minimalist aesthetic and ambient music starring a Master Kick-Asser Faith as the protagonist, you can’t just let an idea like that go. Plus the game was really short and ended on a cliffhanger. What’s gonna happen to Faith and the runners? What about Kate and her link with the blues? And what about Callaghan’s re-election campaign?

On thing’s for sure: if a new Mirror’s Edge game is made, James and I will welcome this with wide-open arms. We want to see this story through to the end.

The Wired Fish Podcast Season 3 – Episode 1 (2 Parts)

Ahoy one and all to the new season of The Wired Fish Podcast! Last Summer we started up a podcast show for TWF. And now we’re back this Summer filming what what will hopefully be a fuller season than Season 2. To commemorate this new season, it’s extra long as we had a lot to talk about. First up, we covered the situation revolving around Tropes vs. Women in Videogames. Next we talked a bit about EA’s money troubles. And finally, we discussed Nintendo’s E3 conference (and Microsoft’s a little bit).
