Bethesda Announces The Evil Within, Hachi Reminds Himself to get a Tetanus Shot

For a while now, Shinji Mikami, the man behind Resident Evil (among other things) has been teasing his new game, previously code named “Project Zwei”, because Mikami likes English like we like syphilis.

The announcement came through this morning that the project is in fact a survival horror game called The Evil Within. It’s being billed as “A return to TRUE survival horror” and “The perfect blend of action and horror.” The game is to be published by Bethesda Softworks and is being developed by Mikami’s studio Tango Gameworks.  Continue reading

Suda 51’s Heart Wasn’t In The Final Product Of Shadows Of The Damned

He is one out of 3 people that really inspire me

According to Shinji Mikami, director of Resident Evil 4, Suda 51′s heart was not in the final release of Shadows of the Damned, which he acted as Executive Director of the project. The director went on to say, “It became a completely different game. That was a bit disappointing. I think Suda was unable to create the scenario he’d originally had in his head, and he rewrote the scenario several times. I think his heart was broken. He’s such a unique creator, so it seems to me that he was not quite comfortable with making this game.The game was nothing like Suda had planned, which is rather sad. Mind you, if we’d made it as he originally planned, it probably would have sold even less, but it would have been very unique.”

It is hard to say anything because I’m not one to believe something unless I hear or read it from the main source’s mouth. But if this is true, then wow. If I can say something to Suda 51 then I will tell him that I liked Shadows Of The Damned even if it wasn’t his ideal end product. It still came out good. If there was something you can say to Suda what would you tell him? Out of a lot of game companies out there, his company and he himself are the few that are doing something different, hate to see a guy like this get discouraged from making great games.

Shinji Mikami Thinks Hollywood Is The Way To Go

Using the Michael Bay method is not the way to go Shinji

In a recent interview with director Shinji Mikami, the man behind Resident Evil, God Hand, and Vanquish stated that “Japan needs to make games like Hollywood makes movies.” The director’s not the only person to say something about Japan’s influence on the gaming industry. Keiji Inafune, then-co-designer of the Mega Man franchise, has also mentioned that he felt that Japanese game designers have fallen behind. And Phil Fish, creator of Fez, recently said “Your games just suck.”

Shinji continues with stating, “Japan used to have the lead in the game industry, but now it’s quite clearly America. To be told that Japanese games suck is a bit harsh. But personally, 80% of the games I play at the moment are not Japanese. Skyrim, Batman…games like that are more interesting to me right now. Japan needs to make more good games if it wants people to think otherwise.” When Shinji is asked about any games that are of the exception he states, “Yes, there are amazing games, just not enough of them… So many are based on anime or fantasy – games that only appeal to Japanese people. Most gamers overseas aren’t interested in anime.” Shinji then moves to comment on a game that’s closer to home, “We made Okami at Clover. It was such a breathtaking game, yet it didn’t sell. If that’s the case, westerners obviously don’t like that sort of game. Maybe they prefer something a little more straightforward.”
