Yoko Shimomura To Compose Her First Mainline Final Fantasy Game

Known for her work on Street Fighter II, the Super Mario RPG/Mario & Luigi series, and Kingdom Hearts, Yoko Shimomura will be at the helm composing music for the newly named Final Fantasy XV. Listening from early trailers of the game, if you have a keen ear for videogame music, you can probably tell that she was composing music for this game from the get go when it was still Final Fantasy Versus XIII. After the reveal of Versus XIII becoming FFXV, Yoko’s gotten a rather noteworthy promotion as far as Final Fantasy games go.

The main Final Fantasy games have been composed by the likes of Hitoshi Sakimoto (Final Fantasy XII, Odin Sphere), Masashi Hamauzu (Final Fantasy XIII, SaGa Frontier 2), and the legendary Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy I-XI and XIV, The Last Story). Yoko Shimomura’s music, at least for the battle themes, is known for its marching drum beats and melodic violins. Other times, she’ll throw in that old-school flair for kicks. The Wired Fish Podcast is back baby! This time we’ve used Google+ Hangouts On-Air to record our podcasts from our homes. So if you ever wish to catch us live, do follow our Facebook and Tumblr page. Well it’s the official release of that live recording, all cleaned up with graphics, trailers, and some neato music for the credits sequence. It’s also audio-only, so we don’t appear on-screen. Hmm, we haven’t done that since the very first episode of the podcast back in 2011.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Actually NOT Cancelled

Last week it was rumored that Final Fantasy Versus XIII was cancelled after Kotaku’s Brian Ashcraft laid out a somewhat detailed breakdown (in conjunction with “sources”) on how little of Versus XIII was actually shown to the public and its absence from major conventions like E3, TGS, and Gamescom. Square Enix head honcho Yoichi Wada stepped in to confirm that Final Fantasy Versus XIII was very much alive and that he had come back from a meeting regarding the game. Via Twitter, he stated, “There’s someone making a false rumor that Versus was cancelled. Haha…Just a minute ago, the regular Versus meeting ended. If you saw the presentation of the city, it’d knock you off your feet~lol”

Looks like Versus XIII is alive and well. However, I still have this feeling it won’t be keeping that Versus name for long. Still though, I wish Square would just show something already with the game! I wanna see this city Wada’s going on about!
