Another Nintendo Direct has gone by this morning. It wasn’t long, but it offered some new info on games we already knew about, namely some release dates on long awaited games. There were a couple of reveals too involving Sonic The Hedgehog. Before we jump, let’s talk about the teaser image up there. It’s from the next game in the Sonic series, titled Sonic: Lost World. So what exactly are we seeing there? Well there’s Sonic on top of the Tornado (most likely piloted by Tails). But then there’s this fractured globe, connected by hexagon-shaped landmasses. There’s some aquatic areas, some plains, a forest, an ice cap, and volcanic areas. There’s also two desert-like areas, probably one resembling a standard desert and the other a more rugged, American-styled desert.
Iwata states that Nintendo is partnering with Sega for this venture. It’s not certain how deep this venture goes, but we do know that Sonic: Lost World will be exclusive to the Wii U and 3DS.
Ah Pikmin, such a quirky game about a man and his sentient plant-life. For this one, we got Suikoinfinity to play this since he’s been playing Pikmin 2 on his livestream page. Have you been seeing it? You should! For this demo, I’m sad to say that the tablet functions were unavailable beyond just displaying a map. But the rep did inform us that upon release the Gamepad will be fully supported and will be the main controller. So for now, let’s enjoy Suikoinfinity play Pikmin 3 with the Wiimore+Nunchuk setup.
Suikoinfinity: (Excuse incoming profanity) This is the one Wii U game I had time to play during my day at Comic Con. I got to look at the pretty map on the gamepad, but after being handed a wiimote/nunchuk it was just a fuckin’ tease. I bought original copies of the Gamecube Pikmin games just so I could avoid that “New Play Control” shit. I couldn’t find a melee attack button, or purpose for picking up apples and stuff aside from getting a better medal at the end of a stage (I missed getting Platinum — that’s a bummer). I can’t really give an opinion on control because I couldn’t use a decent gamepad, but the combat and atmosphere felt like any other Pikmin game. Here’s hoping there’s more to pick up than fruit/points and that Louie is a playable character!
Last year Nintendo revealed their next console, the Wii U, which garnered mixed reactions from many a gamer. Rumors have circulated over the specs of the console. Some developers have said that the console is just as powerful as the 360 and PS3. Other have said it even more powerful than both. Then come the leaked picture of the updated Wii U Tablet Controller. On the games side, we got Xenoblade! And we’re getting The Last Story later this month courtesy of XSEED. What of the fate of Pandora’s Tower? What will Pikmin 3 look like? Will there be a Starfox game by Platinum Games? Will there be a crossover of Starfox and Metroid by Retro Studios? All will be known today.
