New Shin Megami Tensei IV Trailer Looks The Same, But Has A Few Things Added

I was about to chastise some sites for being ultra late on news that we already broke weeks ago. Then I noticed something off with this trailer. The trailer for Shin Megami Tensei IV looks the same, starts the same, sounds the same. Then things seem off once the Titan shows up onscreen and doesn’t have that… er, titanic voice. Then you hear that line some seconds later. I thought there was a lag in the audio. New stuff becomes apparent at the 2:24 mark. For those who don’t know Japanese (or were fighting over how some of those names were spelled), they finally introduce the characters and their names in Romanji characters. Considering they’re supposed to be samurai, the names sound rather western. International samurai perhaps? A new character, Steven, is briefly shown sitting in a chair in some demonic looking chamber. A bit more fusion is shown off as well.

New Trailer For Shin Megami Tensei IV Surfaces

Some time ago a trailer for Shin Megami Tensei IV surfaced. It didn’t show much in the way of gameplay and story, but it did show some scenes that looked to take place in multiple eras. But now a New trailer has surfaced, this time from Atlus themselves. We can see more actions being performed with the armbrace that was shown briefly in the previous trailer. From the looks of it, it looks like a augmented reality device the main character wears to get info on his surroundings.

On the action side of things, the dungeons are your usual MegaTen demonic fare, with battles reverting back to the old-school first person view (instead of all characters being visible like in Nocturne, the 3rd mainline SMT game). Very briefly (around the 1:35 mark), we can see that battles are not random and are initiated by pixel-men. The enemies themselves are sprite based. A little bit after that, we can see what looks to be a fusion taking place, a series staple. The music from the website can also be heard.

More info on Shin Megami Tensei IV will be divulged this Saturday during the Tokyo Game Show.

Atlus Re-Does Shin Megami Tensei IV Website, Adds Kickass Music

Fresh off the leak of the the Shin Megami Tensei IV trailer, Atlus updated the website for the game. Instead of a shot of the city and somber music, we now have black and white background with an outlined silhouette of what could be the main character. As Siliconera points out, the bottom of the image says, in Japanese, that Devil Summoner Soul Hackers will contain the first trailer for SMT IV, with then concludes with “And then…” What could this point out to? More info on the game when the 3DS port/remake Soul Hackers is released? Maybe a direct link to Soul Hackers and SMT IV?

Who knows. but for now, let’s enjoy that awesome music on the website now. I wanna say it’s Shouji Meguro (since he took over all composing duties for the MegaTen franchise since Nocturne), but this doesn’t sound like the band/soundset he usually works with. One thing’s for sure, if this game’s gonna have music like this, it’s gonna be a hardhitting and atmospheric soundtrack.

Shin Megami Tensei IV Gets A Trailer

Now you might be thinking, “huh? Isn’t Strange Journey the fourth mainline SMT game?” Well it’s actually not. Our colleague Hachi76 told us this during a podcast tapings some weeks ago. You can pretty much pin this on Atlus just slapping the SMT name on a lot of things and confusing us on which is a side-story and which is mainline.

So then. What do we see in this trailer. Well, it starts off looking like something out of Avatar: The Last Airbender. A large fortress is shown with what looks like shots of the inside flashing onscreen. It then shows three people looking over the fortress (probably from inside the walls) and then cuts to a someone with a mysterious looking arm-brace that looks way too advanced for the time period this is set in. The screen flashes white and fades back in to these same individuals now in a modern setting (most likely Japan) with words being spoken by different people. Quick shots of some shadows and a ruined city are shown. Finally, we see an in-game shot of what could be the protagonist standing still as the environment around him changes from parts of a ruined street to a large desert. Lots of mysteries abound in this trailer.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is planned for a 2013. Accoding to the website, it looks like it’s headed for the 3DS.

Review : Rock of Ages; PSN (Played), XBLA, PC

I remember once in composition class, my professor mentioned something about Rock of Ages while telling one of his old stories (the guy’s at least in his 70’s), tipping me off that there might be some other, probably more popular work that shares the same name. Sure enough, a Google search is more likely to direct you to a musical or movie. I never was into theatre, so don’t be too surprised when I say that it was the game I first heard about before the production.

While titles are shared, thematic content is not. Our game does not revolve around a timeless musical genre (there isn’t even rock in the soundtrack). Instead, the title is to be taken more literally; it’s about one man and his giant boulder traveling through different time periods and doing battle with various historical figures throughout Europe.

Any of you guys remember those old JibJab political cartoons which while slightly funny, started a trend of manipulating still pictures of people so that they appear to be talking or performing various actions? Imagine that treatment with authentic historical art styles and you have just about every cutscene in the game. While in play, units, buildings and the overall scenery on the playing field are three dimensional models. On the other hand, all human characters including the ones controlling the boulders from behind castle walls and the giant human hand that places the boulder back on track if it falls off are presented as paper cutouts.

Atlus Teasing A Persona 3 Movie

Persona 4 got a lot of love from Atlus. It got an anime, a Vita remaster, and even a fighting game. But Persona 3… well, there are four characters from it in that fighting game. Not much love… until now. Atlus launched a website teasing Persona 3: The Movie. It’s shows the protagonist of Persona 3 and a countdown timer with “Coming Soon” sandwiched between the time and title. The countdown timer is weird though as it seems to count upward. Maybe it’s not a countdown, but just a visual asset. In the original Persona 3, time was a crucial element as everyday at midnight, the Dark Hour would begin. Those with the ability to summon Personas experienced the Dark Hour, and everyone else were placed in coffins and remained safe. When it was over, those in coffins came out of it and resumed their lives (or kept sleeping since it was midnight). Think of it as time freezing for everyone except hose with the gift and the occasional regular person wandering into the Dark Hour.

I wonder what this movie will cover. Like its sequel, Persona 3 is a hefty game. Not sure if a movie would be enough to tell this story. Maybe it’s planned OVAs. Or might serve to bridge the gap between P3 and P4 (since P3 characters are in the canon P4A). Only thing we can say is that, according to the info at the bottom, it’ll be done by Aniplex. Lots of questions, little answers. Stay tuned.

Persona 4 Arena will feature a 30-40 hour story mode

According to game director Kazuhisa Wada, in a post on the official Persona 4 Arena Blog, Persona 4 Arena’s story mode will be a huge part of the game and will last somewhere between 30 to 40 hours. On top of that, the story is being written by the Persona Team themselves and will feature full voice acting. You can check out the Japanese trailer after the jump.

E3: Persona 4 Arena Trailer

Update: An official release date has been confirmed. Persona 4 Arena will be arriving in North America on August 7th and will feature both the original Japanese voice track as well as the new English voice-work.

Here’s a new trailer for Persona 4 Arena with more gameplay, one very hyper announcer, and a tease of the Midnight Channel’s return. Persona 4 Arena is still slated for release this summer and I believe many Persona and fighting fans alike have this game on their radar. I know several of us at The Wired Fish do.

Persona 4: The Golden’s Swanky Opening

Man, look at MC’s dance moves! Straight swag all over the place. I will admit, this opening is very weird, especially when you compare it to the opening of the original Persona 4 and Persona 3 Portable. But man that song is so damn awesome! Carefree and smooth. Love hearing a song like this in a game. I gotta admit everyone looks like they went to the suburban school of dance. Regardless, I really like the kaleidoscope theme these guys were going for. Bravo to Atlus for another awesome opening.

Persona 4: The Golden is expected to release this October in the U.S. for the Playstation Vita.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment [PSP] Intro

Now that the PSP version of Persona 2: Eternal Punishment has released (or is close to release) in Japan, It’s time to see the intro to it. Right away I noticed that the music is more reminiscent of the older versions of the P2 games rather than making a new song for the Innocent Sin entry of the game. The intro is done by MadHouse, the same guys doing the anime for Persona 4: The Animation. Still no word on if we’re getting this version here in the states. If we are, they better do it soon ’cause the PSP’s on its last legs. I mean, that didn’t stop them from releasing P4 late in the PS2’s lifecycle, but the state of the PSP here is worse.

A Pair Of Shin Megami Tensei News To Wet Your Appetite

If you have forgotten about it, here’s a reminder that Persona 2: Eternal Punishment will be hitting the PSP in Japan soon. Atlus has released a new trailer for the game and showed bits of gameplay as well. From the looks of it, it will stick to what made Innocent Sin a fun, old-school romp. Admitedly, I don’t know much about Eternal Punishment outside of only knowing it was the only Persona 2 game released in the U.S. back then. So I was surprised to see that Nanjo, the rich guy from Persona 1, will be in Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. Maya will take over as the main protagonist with Tatsuya Suou playing a scondary role. Katsuya Suou looks like he’ll play a bigger role as well. Madhouse will be doing the intro for Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. Satelight, the studio that did Innocent Sin‘s intro, will be busy doing the intro for the next game I’m going to talk about.

Elizabeth and Two Others Join Persona 4: Arena

Continuing the trend of checking official websites, it looks like Persona 4 Arena‘s Japanese site got an update too. Several in fact. Going there now, you’ll notice that the sites taking a little longer to load. That’s because the theme song gotten a change. Now someone is singing the theme song in glorious, glorious Engrish. Delving into the characters section, you’ll see three new combatants have been added. First is Elizabeth, Igor’s assistant from Persona 3. This might peak your interest if you’ve played to the end of Persona 3 and fought Margaret in Persona 4. Since Persona 4 Arena is canon and takes place after Persona 4, her inclusion might indicate something. She’ll be using Thanatos as her Persona.

Along with her is a character named Labyrs. She looks like a new character since I’ve never seen her in Persona 4. Maybe I haven’t played far enough in P4 (I’m still in Naoto’s Dungeon). The other character is Shadow Labrys. She (meaning both) looks like another android like Aigis. Her uniform suggests that she’s from Inaba. Her regular form’s Persona is Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos of Crete in Greek Mythology who was in charge of the Labyrinth. The Shadow form’s Persona is Asterius (aka Asterion), the Minotaur of Crete that was in the Labyrinth. Huh, looks like Atlus had a dream of seeing Japanese and Greek mythological figures clash. Persona 4 Arena is slated for a Summer release in the U.S. on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment Confirmed For Release on PSP

I saw the alert in my inbox today and though, “Man these guys are ultra late. This game came out last summer.” Then I look closer, and it’s actually about the other Persona 2 game, Eternal Punishment. In any case, Atlus has confirmed that Persona 2: Eternal Punishment will be released in Japan in May of this year. Eternal Punishment is a sort of continuation/expansion of the story told in Innocent Sin. Here, the story takes place a few months later, everything is set in a parallel world where the events that happened in Innocent Sin… never happened. Maya is now the silent protagonist, everyone returns but they do not know each other, save for Tatsuya, Innocent Sin’s protagonist, who remembers everything. I haven’t beaten the first Persona 2 game to know why EP is set up this way. I’m far though. Let’s just say that the map is very different from when I first started the game.

Atlus has confirmed that the new intro animation for Eternal Punishment will be done by Madhouse, the studio behind Persona 4: The Animation. IS‘ opening was done by Satelight. On the music side, players will be able to switch between the remastered and original soundtrack in-game. So far no word yet if Persona 2: Eternal Punishment will make it stateside. With Innocent Sin it seemed like a must since that was the only Persona to not get a U.S. release. With Eternal Punishment, it was released back in 2000 for the PS1, so it may not be that big of a priority. But ya never know. Atlus has been making nice with its fans so far, so I wouldn’t write this one off just yet.

Persona 4: The Ultimate Confirmed For U.S. Release With Shortented Name

Atlus has just confirmed that Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena will be released in the U.S. for Xbox 360 and PS3 this summer. With this release comes a new, shorter name for those that thought it was a mouthful (or just felt uncomfortable using the P4U abbreviation). It’ll be known as Persona 4: Arena in the U.S. No word yet if the English voice cast will come back reprise their rolls, or what that one card is hiding on the Japanese website’s character screen. Pre-orders are currently being taken though Gamestop, Amazon, and VGP. The U.S. site is up, but so far there’s only the pre-order information shown.
