Former Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi Has Died

Hiroshi YamauchiNikkei has reported that Hiroshi Yamauchi has passed away. Known for his no-nonsense style of business at Nintendo, he turned the company around from making just playing cards and other gambling games to creating videogames. He demanded perfection in the videogames his company made.

He was responsible for many of the gears that set in motion what made Nintendo a household name to this day. He brought on Gunpei Yokoi, who went on to create the Game & Watch and Game Boy line of handhelds. He tasked Minoru Arakawa, his son-in-law, to handle the North American branch of Nintendo and to sell arcade units in the region. When that didn’t work well, he looked to Shigeru Miyamoto, who made the arcade hit Donkey Kong. Come the NES days, he realized that artists are just as important to making games as technicians were. If a game was to be made on the NES, he got the final say on its appearance on the console. Many credit the NES, and the presence of Super Mario Bros. on the system, for saving the North Amercian videogame market after the Great Videogame Crash of 1983.

SEGA Sammy Has Bought Atlus, Process To Begin In November [UPDATE]

Sega buys Atlus

[UPDATE 2] And it’s official. SEGA Sammy has bought Index Holdings (Atlus’ parent company). It looks like Nikkei simply reported something too early, and SEGA Sammy attempted to curb some of the damage. You can read the report and see for yourself. SEGA will not take on Index’s debt, but instead their properties.

[UPDATE] SEGA Sammy is reporting that they have not made any moves regarding the acquisition of Index Holdings and are denying Nikkei‘s reports. Although it is true that they did bid on the company. The original article will follow below. Any further updates will be added up here.

I’m a little conflicted here, but first the news. It’s been reported in Nikkei that SEGA Sammy has successfully bought out all the assets from Index Holdings that involved Atlus (currently a subsidiary of the company). Earlier this year Index was in a bit of trouble when it was discovered that the company was performing some illegal activities with its finances and unable to pay off its debt. It got to the point where police stormed the offices and was under investigation for fraud. Since then things never improved Index filed for a form of Bankruptcy in Japan, putting itself up for auction. SEGA Sammy was the highest bidder and has bought them. Etrian Odyssey Untold: Millennium Girl is currently the only prior engagement to not be affected by the acquisition.

Peach Returns To The Fray In Super Smash Bros. 4

SSB4 Peach

The crowned knuckle is back, and in HD! Princess Peach of the Musroom Kingdom has been added to the roster of fighters in Super Smash Bros. 4. For Mario series representatives so far, we have four reps in total. Peach’s outfit remains the same as it was in Brawl, albeit in higher resolution than it was in that game. Her moves for the most part remain intact, though it looks like her Up Smash now has a ribbon, probably the same ribbon as the one from the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series. Her hips of steel make a comeback too, evident by Fox failure to handle such feats. Her character art is looking mighty fine too. Compared to her art in Brawl, the color here is a lot more vibrant.

Check out some screenshots of Peach after the break.

Yatagarasu PayPal

What is up with PayPal lately? Nyu Media’s Seon King announced the other day on Yatagarasu‘s Indiegogo page that PayPal was withholding 50% of the funding that they’re to receive from those who payed using PayPal to donate. Given that many prefer to make payments online using PayPal’s system, that’s a lot of money being held. $118,243 was raised for the project, many of which was payed using PayPal.

Nintendo Reveals The 2DS

No, this is not a joke. This is real. Nintendo has announced a new iteration their 3DS system. Called the Nintendo 2DS, this new version features much of what the original 3DS offers. Like the name suggests, it lacks the parallax barrier 3D that was used on the 3DS and 3DS XL. On top of this, it no longer has the clamshell design that was the cornerstone of the DS since the beginning (and even before that with the GBA SP). Since there’s no hinge between the two screens, the buttons have been moved up to the middle of the two screens. This new form factor brings it closer to the older line of Game Boy systems, namely the original Game Boy Advance.

From the looks of the trailer, it seems to be aimed more at a younger demographic, though older people are shown as well. The screen dimensions look to be around the same size as the original 3DS. It’s also backwards compatible with all DS games and can communicate with other 3DS systems as well. It makes one wonder though how you put the thing into sleep mode for Streetpass. Maybe the power button doubles as a Sleep Mode button perhaps (like the PSP)? Of course, you better have some place to hold the thing as you’re walking.

The Nintendo 2DS is scheduled to be released October 12th of this year and will retail for $129.99.

With Peach Playable In Super Mario 3D World, What’s Bowser Planning? Is He Even The Main Villain?

Is he even the villain

After one of Nintendo’s Direct Presentations earlier this summer, one of the smaller surprises of the broadcast was Super Mario 3D World‘s revelation of Peach as a playable character. While she’s been playable in other Mario games, like Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Mario Party, and a couple of the RPG games, you don’t really see her taking center stage as a playable character in a straight-up platformer. Her first foray as a playable character started way back in our version of Super Mario Bros. 2. What she lacked in turnip-pulling strength, she made up for in her ability to float. In more recent times, she starred in her own game, Super Princess Peach, which flipped the script and put her in charge of the saving duty.

So now Peach is playable once again in a mainline Mario platformer. Awesome. But what about Bowser? What’s he scheming in all of this? Is he even involved in any of this? Let’s theorize on this a bit.

Guilty Gear Xrd Location Test Reveals May, Potemkin, Chipp Zanuff, And More Millia Rage

Guilty Gear Xrd Potemkin (2)Over in Japan, the location test of Arc System Works’ Guilty Gear Xrd was well underway, and with it came the reveal of returning favorites. First up is the anchor wielding May, followed by the massive Potemkin, who’s either sporting a full suit of armor or has gone fully robotic. Chipp Zanuff and Venom also make a return as well. The pictures from RadioKaikan also show off other characters as well, like Jam and Bridget, though it’s possible that it’s just promo material for Guilty Gear in general and not specifically for Xrd. Still, it’s a safe bet that they’ll be coming back as well.

Guilty Gear Xrd is the first game in the series to use the Unreal Engine, and it’s using it in way you wouldn’t expect. While what you see in the initial trailer and in the pics from the location test might look like 2D sprites, the character models are actually in 3D. In other words, it’s cel-shading that resembles sprite work. Pretty impressive if you ask me. You’ll see what I mean if you look at the “You Rock” and intro/victory screens taken by Famitsu.

You can check out some more screens after the jump.

Is That Some Lance’s Island I See In Super Smash Bros. 4?

PilotWings Lance's Island

It is Lance’s Island in Super Smash Bros. 4! Today’s SSB4 update reveals Lance’s Island from Pilotwings. It’s unknown if this will be a full stage or just a backdrop to a larger, possibly Pilotwings-related stage.

Lance’s Island was the 3rd training course of the original Pilotwings on the SNES. The Hang Glider was introduced in this course, along with roundabout flying with the Light Plane. If there’s one thing I remember most about this course, it’s the chill-ass Hang Glider theme.

Now that you know where this stage comes from, don’t be like this guy and think it’s from Minecraft.

New Nintendo 3DS Update Makes StreetPasses Easier

Nintendo Zone

A new update to the 3DS has gone live overnight, and this one adds a new way to StreetPass with other users. Using Nintendo Zone, places like Best Buy, McDonalds, and StarBucks will act as relay points, sending streetpass data long after you stayed or passed by the area.

The way it works is like this: say you pass by or stay in a place like McDonalds. The Nintendo Zone there will store your StreetPass data for a limited time. Then when someone passes by, they’ll get your StreetPass data AND have theirs stored as well. It’s pretty much like a regular StreetPass, except you don’t have to physically pass the person.

This will definitely be a big help to those who live in rural areas where there aren’t that many people around or the next person is miles away. Many who live in these areas expressed difficulty in passing by other 3DS users.

If you want to find a Nintendo Zone near you, head over to Nintendo’s website and find out. Nintendo Zone’s are usually in BestBuy stores, McDonalds, and Starbucks. It’s not limited to these stores (as shown in the above image), but just to give you an idea of what place might have one.

Is XSEED Teasing Senran Kagura Localization? [UPDATE] Confirmed For NA Release!

She Speaks The Truthpictured: Senran Kagura anime

[UPDATE]For the sake of consistency, I’ll just update this article instead of making a new one. Hit the jump to see the update.

After a few hints and inklings since the initial game’s Japanese release, in comes word that XSEED might be localizing a Senran Kagura game. First was the registration of HanzoNationalAcademy.com domain, referencing the setting of the Senran Kagura games. The site is registered to XSEED JKS inc. Going there (at the time of this writing) only shows blank slate with text that reads “Your website is ready. This site has been successfully created and is ready for content to be added. Replace this default page with your own index page.”

Next up was an image of a kinda yellow, kinda flesh toned square tweeted by the XSEED’s Twitter account. This was followed by Kenichiro Takaki, the Senran Kagura producer, tweeting this, and then this.

Stonehenge, Aigaion, And Rex Tremendae Teased In Latest Ace Combat Infnity Trailer

Looks like our suspicions are correct as what was shown in this trailer is what was speculated last time. The trailer begins with Rex Tremendae, the song that introduces Megalith in Ace Combat 04. What follows is quick shots of several jets flying, craters in the cities caused by meteors, and a direct reference to AC04 superweapon, Stonehenge, by name. Speaking of radio chatter, one of the pilots in the beginning mentions to his surprise that meteor fragments are still falling from the skies 20 years after, from what I’m guessing, the Ulysses meteor. Though this takes place in the real world, Iyuli, the location in Russia that is shown in the briefing graphic, is fictional. Same goes for AC6’s flying fortress, Aigaion, which we see more of.

Want The Regginator In Super Smash Bros. 4? There’s a Petition For That!

Swagginator

If there’s one missed opportunity (of many) on the Playstation side of the SSB/PSAS battle, it’s that Kevin Butler (or at least Kaz Hirai) wasn’t a playable character. With Nintendo, there are many popular personalities that make up the company we know today. Chief among them being Nintendo of America’s President, Reggie Fils-Aime. How cool/weird would it be to play as Reggie in the next Smash Bros.? Well, a Petition has surfaced asking for just that.

According to the petition, Twitter user taco_belmont asked the NoA president if he would be a playable character in SSB4. Reggie answered, “You have to ask that to Mr. Sakurai. He’s the producer of the game, it’s his game. But if he wants, my body is ready.” As of this writing, the petition has garnered 8,728 signatures. The petition writer hops to raise awareness by getting #ReggieForSmashBros trending. If he does make it in, here’s a suggestion for his Final Smash. Think about it Nintendo.

New Trademark Filed For Eternal Darkness

Eternal Darkness

Could there be something new in the works? Unearthed by Siliconera, Nintendo has filed a new trademark for Eternal Darkness. The last time Nintendo filed a trademark for this was back in 2010. One detail Siliconera notes between the two trademark filings is that this new one mentions “downloadable electronic game programs; downlodable electronic game software” on top of what they filed for last time. Could they be planning some sort of re-release? Maybe a sequel? Or could they be covering their asses with the downloadable part, lest someone else swoop in and cause unnecessary legal action?

Cancelled Stage And Updated Menu Design For Playstation All-Stars Leaked Online

Playstation All-Stars Journey-Gravity Rush Stage (2)

Due to lack of support and poor sales of Playstation All-Stars and its DLC characters, all future updates for the game has since been cancelled and SuperBot disbanded. As a result, former employees are coming forward showcasing what could’ve been. Last time, we saw images of Legend of Dragoon‘s Dart in the works. Now, we have an entire stage on the cutting room floor. In keeping with the mash-up theme of the PSAS stages, the stage in question was a cross between Gravity Rush and Journey. From the looks of it, the stage would start off on the Gravity Rush part. Then the side of the building would begin to tumble around, parts would start falling off, and sort of drift into Journey. Makes you wonder if there was a mash-up of Gravity Rush and Journey music. Oh what could’ve been…

Hit up the jump to see the new main menu they had planned.
