Rayman Legends Launching on September 3rd, Just Barely Avoiding GTA V

Pictured: Rayman and crew barely escaping GTA V

Pictured: Rayman and crew barely escaping GTA V

One of my biggest fears regarding the Rayman Legends delay was that it would be absolutely slaughtered and wasted by Grand Theft Auto V, which still has a release date of September 17th. Well those fears have subsided a bit as now Rayman Legends will be releasing before the Kraken is unleashed, launching on September 3rd in the U.S. It’s still pretty close to GTA V by two weeks, but I think this could spell good things for the game. I’d still prefer it got released some time in August (Europe will get the game on August 29th), that way the psyche of the gaming populace isn’t affixed to the September = GTA V mentality and forget about Rayman Legends. Then again, the fate of a smaller game vs. a bigger game is much more grim when the small game comes out after the bigger game. So for now, we wait for the results.

Earthbound Is Now U.S. Virtual Console Bound!

Earthbound Virtual Console

Sorry for the pun, but it had to happen. Late this morning, Satoru Iwata in the latest Nintendo Direct announced that Earthbound will be headed to the North American Wii U Virtual Console by the end of this year. This news came as a result of North American fans practically bombarding the Mother 2 Miiverse with pleas of a U.S. release when it launched in Japan in March.

Earthbound (known as Mother 2 in Japan) was a commercial flop when it launched back on the SNES, leading Nintendo to ignore markets outside Japan whenever games in this series popped up. This also lead to Earthbound 2 (aka Mother 3) never getting launched here either. However, the series has gained a passionate cult following, clamoring for some kind of release in this series. It also helped that Ness, the main character of Earthbound, was something of a mainstay in the Super Smash Bros. series and helped give exposure to the game he came from (like Marth and Roy for Fire Emblem). Some, including myself, want to get into this game to see what all the hubbub is about. Unfortunately, the asking price for the cartridge alone is well into the $100+ range online. Maybe those assholes can lower the price now.

No word yet if the music will be changed since many fans believed it was the many music samples that prevented a re-release in the U.S. But now, more of the U.S. can finally play an RPG that some call one of the best RPGs of all time.

[April Fools] Nintendo And Hasbro Announce Kirby X My Little Pony

Kirby X My Little Pony (1.1)

If you thought Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem was a weird crossover, then get a load of this. With the premier of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in Japan close as hand, Nintendo and Hasbro announced that they’ll be partnering up to create a crossover game, tentatively titled Kirby X My Little Pony. While development is still in its early stages, Nintendo was willing to share some info regarding how the story will pan out and how the game will play.

Nintendo Ad Campaigns Retrospective [2013 Edition]

Nintendo Ad Campaign Retrospective 2013[New to this edition is the addition of the Wii U campaign. Much of what was written from the previous edition is largely unchanged, save for some grammatical corrections that might’ve slipped by. Some parts might also have more info added. So sit back, relax, and read on.]

You have an idea for a product. You make the product. And now it’s time to sell the product. So what’s the one thing you’ll do to sell your product? Advertise it of course. This is pretty much the pattern that most product makers follow. In the game industry it’s no different. With catchy slogans, flashy graphics, and some off-the-wall shenanigans, an ad is supposed to convince you to buy the product they are selling. But ignoring all of the attempts to sell and actually looking at the ad, they always seem to be a product of the era that they were released in. So for this retrospective, we’re going to look at one of the longest living game companies, Nintendo, from when we played with power, to when we played it loud, to two guys asking us if Wii would like to play, to what we will play next.

Mighty Switch Force Getting a Sequel

Mighty Switch Force 2

A direct one at that (unlike other Mighty games)! Jonathan Homes over at Destructoid was told by Austin Ivansmith of Wayforward that they’ll be making Mighty Switch Force 2 for the 3DS and are hoping to get it ready for either Q1 or Q2 of this year. It was also confirmed that Patricia Wagon, the game’s protagonist, won’t be catching criminal girls, but instead doing something else. Ivansmith also told Holmes that the original composer, Virt, will be returning for the sequel and that he’s some of those songs at MAGFest.

To celebrate this news, WayForward put Mighty Switch Force: Hyperdrive Edition on sale for 50% off on the Nintendo eShop. So it you haven’t gotten it yet, get on it!

Weeks Away From Launch, Rayman Legends Gets Delayed To September (Same Month As GTA V’s Release)

Rayman delayed

Like the header suggests, this is Delaying-Anarchy-Reigns levels of stupid. Previously Rayman Legends was slated to release on the Wii U on February 26th. Ubisoft then announced that the game would go multiplatform, no longer being a Wii U exlusive. I see no problem with this as I still don’t own a Wii U (yet) and might have a better chance getting it for my PS3. Plus, more people get to play the game. Then came the announcement immediately afterward that the game would be delayed to September 2013. Woah! That’s a deep delay, almost as deep as Anarchy Reigns‘ delay.

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem Announced

Woah. Um, ….woah. Did not see this coming at all. During a Wii U centered Nintendo Direct this morning, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced that Nintendo and Atlus were collaborating on a game. The trailer commenced with Shin Megami Tensei characters appearing on-screen. Looked normal. And then BAM, Fire Emblem characters! Now I’m very curious as to what exactly these two sides will bring to the table. Both franchises had their roots in being once Japan-Only titles and being RPGs. What could be more different from the two is one being much darker than the other. The stories of Shin Megami Tensei tend to deal with existential dilemmas, religion, and cast God as one big douchebag. Fire Emblem‘s plot varies from game to game, sometimes deals with a power struggle between kingdoms and a search for the titular Fire Emblem. And there’s also the game’s perma-death feature. Wonder if that’ll make it into this game.

One aspect I’m really curious about is the juxtaposition of the music from both franchises. Fire Emblem‘s music is known to have beautiful, sweeping orchestral arrangements, sometimes delving into more pounding rock-like compositions. SMT‘s music on the other hand is really dark with hard guitar riffs, odd voices (sometimes), and some pretty unnerving arrangements. You can even hear the difference in the trailer itself with the SMT characters being shown, followed by the Fire Emblem characters with their theme.
Gotta say, I’m pretty hyped!

New Monolith Soft Game Revealed For Wii U, Likely A New Xeno Entry

This morning’s Nintendo Direct was full of surprises for Wii U owners. The Wii U-centric presentation revealed several new releases for the console that I’m sure will have owners and would-be owners foaming at the mouth, but one in particular just blew me and many other Xenoblade fans away.

Monolith Soft’s new unnamed Wii U title was revealed during Nintendo Direct with a trailer that gives us a small taste of what to expect. The gameplay and environment look extremely similar to Monolith Soft’s Xenoblade Chronicles, which was released on the Wii last year. Steven and I sung its praises during last week’s podcast, both dubbing it our game of the year. The red X that appears at the end of the trailer also resembles the Xenogears logo, which gives even more reason to believe this game is related to the Xeno series. Tetsuya Takahashi, who directed both Xenogears and Xenoblade, returns as director for this title, as well as character designer Kunihiko Tanako. I’m a little disappointed that Yoko Shimomura isn’t doing the soundtrack but, if the song from the trailer is anything to go by, Hiroyuki Sawano’s music sounds like it’s going to be amazing.

What really has me excited though is that Monolith Soft seems to be bringing back one of the best features of Xenogears, the ability to fight both inside and outside of a mech. This game seems to take it even further with being able to hover and transform into vehicles as well. And if the world is as vast and fun to explore as Xenoblade’s was, then I can only imagine what they have in store for players this time around now.

I’ve already re-watched that trailer more times than I care to admit, and it gives me chills each and every time. I have to say, this is the game that may convince me to get a Wii U. And even if it weren’t, there are plenty of other reasons for gamers to purchase one after today’s Nintendo Direct. For Nintendo, it looks like the gloves are coming off.

Momiji and Kasumi Coming Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor’s Edge… For Free!

Momiji and Kasumi

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. Yes, for free. In the U.S. Nintendo Direct video a couple of days ago, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge producer Yosuke Hayashi revealed that female ninja Momiji would become playable via a patch for the game. He states in the video, “If you can connect to the internet, you will be able to download her for free as part of a patch.” Seeming to almost start wrapping up his segment, he continues on with, “And that’s not all! Kasumi from the Dead of Alive series will also be a playable character in NG3:RE. She will be also available as a free update if you can connect online…”

I like seeing stuff like this. No word yet if they’ll be free forever or for a limited time. Either way, all you need is internet and you’re good to go. No cash required!

Mighty Switch Force Hyper Drive Editon Trailer

WayForward startin’ early on the Wii U, and they’re startin’ with Mighty Switch Force Hyper Drive Edition. This prison-girl catching puzzle platformer comes to the Wii U with cleaner redrawn sprites, bringing the in-game art closer to the concept and packaging art from many of WayForward’s games. It also comes with all the 3DS stages reimagined in HD and 21 more stages for Hyper Mode. I tried this out on James’ 3DS before one of of the podcast tapings a while back, and I got pretty damned hooked. I had to stop though since I didn’t want to get beyond where James was.

Mighty Switch Force Hyper Drive Edition is currently available on Nintendo’s shop on the Wii U.

Little Inferno Gets A Second Trailer

The World of Goo guys are back at it, and this time the world is a darker place in Little Inferno. The second trailer gives us a better idea of what the game is about. You get money which you use in a shop to buy stuff to put in a fireplace. Aaaand then you watch them burn. However, further into the trailer seems to suggests that some of these toys are sentient and are curious about what’s further up the chimney. It’s also great to see Kyle Gabler making more music, and it still just as sweeping as it was in World of Goo.

Little Inferno is expected to release around Winter of this year for Wii U, PC, Mac, and Linux.

The Captains Speaketh: Wii U Expectations

The launch of the Wii U is almost upon us. Since its reveal, the latest Nintendo console has garnered the most skepticism since the reveal of the original Xbox. Almost every facet of this console has been monitored by both press and fans alike. “What’s the CPU?” “What’s the tablet gonna be like?” “Are the games gonna suck again?” Now, it’s our turn. What do we hope Nintendo does with the Wii U? What games, features and tablet controls do we want to see? Hit the jump to see what we speaketh.

Mass Effect 3 On Wii U To Get Interactive Comic For First Two Games, All DLC Included

Ever since the reveal of Mass Effect 3 for the Wii U, one thing that bugged me was how exactly anyone playing the Wii U version would be able to make any previous decisions really matter. The Mass Effect games are well known for having the choices you made in the previous incarnations carry over to the next game, whether by making something different or your choices being referenced by the characters. Well, EA is looking to alleviate the omission of the first two ME games by giving you an interactive comic, Mass Effect Genesis. This time it will detail the events of the first two games, similar to how the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 handled the first game. Still, would it kill EA to just release that newly announced Mass Effect Trilogy compilation on the Wii U and be done with it.

Along with this, the Wii U version of Mass Effect 3 will come with all the released so far for the game already included and ready to play. This includes From Ashes, the Extended Cut, all the multiplayer packs (Rebellion, Resurgence, and Earth). No word on the Leviathan chapter, but since it just came out, it’s probably not getting included. So far this looks like a good deal if you’re planning on getting a Wii U but haven’t played Mass Effect 3 yet.

[NYCC 2012] Hands-On With ZombiU (Capture-The-Flag Mode)

StevenDPX finally got his hands on ZombiU, one of the bigger entries in the Wii U launch lineup. However, He opted to play the game’s Capture-The-Flag mode, which pitted Humans versus Zombies. The human player would used the Pro Controller and the TV screen while the Zombie player used the Wii U Gamepad and the touch screen to spawn Zombies to hunt down the player and take the flag for himself.

StevenDPX: I wanted to see what else this tablet controller was capable of, so I tried playing as the Zombies. Admittedly, I was very horrible at it, but it did some cool things that reminded me of playing an RTS. On the Gamepad’s screen, you have an overhead view of the map. There are three flags to get, and the player is visible via and indicator. So your job is to stop his progress by throwing Zombies in his path. Some to distract him, some to kill him, and only one to capture the flag. When you level up, you’ll have access to more zombie types. Of course, you are limited to how many zombies you can place on the map. Certain zombies require certain points to be spawned, and no points mean no zombies. You also have to spread them out since you can’t spawn two or more zombies next to each other. So you have to pick your undead wisely. While I was bad at this, I can see quite a few people enjoying this mode.
