Top 10 Moments In Videogames That Scared The Crap Outta Me

Halloween. A time for tricks, scares, and costumes. A time to exploit the emotion that grips many of us when it rears its ugly head: Fear. In videogames, there are unnerving things that we aren’t really ready for when they happen, or that make us jump out when they happen. In this list, I’ll be showcasing things in videogames that just scare the crap outta me. Did it make me jump? Was there a moment of tension? Or was there a place that I wanted to leave quickly? Hit the jump, and lets explore my Top 10 Moments in Videogames That Scared The Crap Outta Me.

The Typing of the Dead: Overkill Out Now on PC

The Typing of the Dead Overkill

It’s time to brush up of you fucking typing skills, ’cause SEGA just released The Typing of the Dead: Overkill. Presumably the same game as The House of the Dead: Overkill on Wii and Ps3, the story follows Agent G. and Detective Washington as they unravel the mystery of where this zombie outbreak started. It’s been over 10 years since the original Typing of the Dead was released, with the most recent version releasing on PC back in 2003. Much like the original Typing of the Dead, instead of aiming a gun (or controller) at the screen, you must instead type out what is shown on the screen to kill each enemy. You can see more of how the original game is played by clicking here.

The Typing of the Dead: Overkill is currently available for PC.

[NYCC 2013] Hands-on with Dustforce

To the corner of the Capcom booth was a demo of Dustforce playing. Intrigued by what he was seeing, Steve tries his hand at this indie platformer. He only had very little knowledge of the game, posting a single song from it on Night-Time Listenings. How did Steve like Dustforce? Click play and find out!

[NYCC 2013] Hands-on with Super Mario 3D World

A new 3D Mario platformer is upon us, and this time it’s taking after the 3DS outing. Super Mario 3D World expands on the foundation of the previous 3D Land game and adds two more characters in the fray, Peach and Toad. Mario is your standard character. Luigi can jump higher than his brother (with the trade-off being low traction). Peach can float for across the air a la Super Mario Bros. 2. And Toad can run faster that any other character. Gameplay can be done on both the TV and on the Gamepad’s screen.

Hit the jump to see gameplay of World 4-2 with James.

[NYCC 2013] Hands-on with Strider

It’s been over a decade since the last Strider game came out on the PS1 (and Arcades). Since then Strider Hiryu stuck to the shadows, showing up here and there in the Marvel vs. Capcom fighting games. But now Strider’s back in an all new game. Now he’s got more moves at his disposal, and the stages, at least this one, are much longer than its predecessor. And as you’ll see in near the end of the demo, the Ouroboros from Strider 2 also makes a return, and this time puts up a better fight than it did in the previous game.

[NYCC 2013] Hands-on with The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

The Zelda series returns to its roots once again with The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Taking place after a Link to the Past on the SNES, Link returns to Hyrule to vanquish the evil that lurks these lands. This time, he’s able to merge with the wall, turning corners to traverse once unreachable areas, and even scale the outside of a castle’s walls. While not available in this demo, A Link Between Worlds also allows players to rent out items from Ravio’s shop and to tackle any dungeon in any order.

[NYCC 2012] Hands-on with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

NYCC has come and gone, and we have some gameplay to show you. First up is the next chapter of the Donkey Kong Country Returns saga, Tropical Freeze. The Tikis are toast, but a new set of baddies has arrived and kicked DK out of his home. This time around The camera plays a bigger role, swerving around our heroes as they’re transported to the next section of a stage and not staying strictly 2D.

Gamepad control was not ready for this demo, so Wiimote+Nunchuk was the controller of choice. It played just like DKCR in this regard. Hit the jump to see some mine cart gameplay.

Super Mario 3D World Trailer Finally Shows Bowser (And His Sweet Pimpin’ Ride!)

During a Nintendo Direct presentation earlier last week, we got so see more Super Mario 3D World gameplay, and a little more on what the Mario crew has to deal with this time (a bit more on that later). Along with the bell power-up that gives our heroes a catsuit, a cherry is introduced that multiplies them into two. Picking up another one during this time adds another copy. We also see Mario donning a Boomerang Bro suit, and the Tanooki Suit from Super Mario 3D Land makes a comeback. Some new carried power-ups are shown off, including one that fires red balls at enemies, disguises you as a Goomba, A baseball and a bomb, and a Piranha Plant pot that eats enemies. The graphics are also looking much prettier than the previous trailers, with lighting similar to Super Mario Galaxy in certain night-time situations.

And finally for the first time in Super Mario 3D World, we see Bowser. In a previous article, I expressed interest on what exactly Bowser has planned this time, and even wondered if he was in this game. Well, that second part is answered as he pops up at the beginning of the trailer. This time he’s taken a fairy hostage, suggesting that this fairy probably has a power that might suit Bowser’s plan to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. Maybe he changed his tactics after realizing taking Peach to lure Mario isn’t working so well? Regardless, he’s back with a new plan, and donning a sweet ride to boot. Just look at that thing! We gotta see more of that car in future installments. Mario Kart 8 perhaps? Please add it to Mario Kart 8 Nintendo.

Servers For Grand Knights History Shutting Down

Grand Knights History servers closing

Before Dragon’s Crown and its online beat ’em up mayhem, there was Grand Knights History. GKH was a PSP RPG by Vanillaware that was rather online heavy with players choosing a kingdom to align with and going online to face other players and their kingdoms. Two years after release, publisher Marvelous Entertainment has announced that the game’s servers in Japan will be shutting down, effective October 31, 2013. The game was scheduled to be localized by XSEED (with Europe’s Rising Star Games using their translation of the game for European release). However, when Vanillaware’s time, resources, and funds were running low due to Dragon’s Crown development and UTV Ignition shenanigans, XSEED had no choice but to drop the localization. This disappointed Vanillaware fans, hurting even more so knowing that the text translation was complete and it was up to Vanillware to insert and program the English version (which is then followed up by more QA).

Out of morbid curiosity, I asked XSEED’s Hatsuu if there’s any chance of GKH being picked up again and getting released now. I pretty much expected a “no”, and that’s exactly what I got. So sorry Vanillware fans, this is one game we won’t be playing.

Shantae and Mighty No. 9: A Tale of Two Crowdfunding Projects

Shantae and Mighty No. 9

Two companies, two games, one common meeting ground. Crowdfunding has been something of a livesaver for projects that probably would never see the light of day through regular means, or save a project from near death. Since the boom of Tim Schafer’s Kickstarter campaign, many indie game companies have looked toward sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo to get their projects off the ground. Skullgirls‘ DLC characters, Shovel Knight, Shadow of the Eternals (on hold as of this writing), and Yatagarasu has made a name for themselves on such crowdfunding sites. This month saw the addition of two more shining stars in the roster of crowdfunded games: Comcept’s Mighty No. 9 and Wayforward’s Shantae: 1/2 Genie Hero. So how did they come about, and how did they do?

Hachi Announces Hokuto no Ken Month, Laughs in the Face of Scheduling

Happy Birthday, eyebrows! ...I mean Kenshiro. No, wait, eyebrows...

Happy Birthday, eyebrows!
…I mean Kenshiro. No, wait, eyebrows…

In celebration of 30 years of brawls, brows and beefy boys beating each other, I would like to officially announce that October will be the month of Fist of the North Star, or Hokuto no Ken, if you’re nasty.

Unlike my other slightly ill-fated saga celebration, the Month of the North Star (trademark pending) will be wider in scope, but looser in schedule. It all may come toward the beginning, or you may get a deluge around Halloween, but rest assured, by the end of this month, you will be treated to several Reviews of the North Star (trademark pending), including both TV anime series’, the Shin Hokuto no Ken OVA and the Raoh-gaiden series from a few years back. Also keep a look out for one, maybe two, Lists of the North Star (trademark pending), and a deeper discussion of what has made the Men of the North Star (pretty sure that one is trademarked already…) such enduring characters.

It’s sure to be an interesting time, so stay tuned to The Wired Fish for your dose of beef and manliness.

And vaguely menacing eye hair...

And vaguely menacing glares.
