To the corner of the Capcom booth was a demo of Dustforce playing. Intrigued by what he was seeing, Steve tries his hand at this indie platformer. It’s been over a decade since the last Strider game came out on the PS1 (and Arcades). Since then Strider Hiryu stuck to the shadows, showing up here and there in the Marvel vs. Capcom fighting games. But now Strider’s back in an all new game. Now he’s got more moves at his disposal, and the stages, at least this one, are much longer than its predecessor. And as you’ll see in near the end of the demo, the Ouroboros from Strider 2 also makes a return, and this time puts up a better fight than it did in the previous game.
The guys over at IGN posted two videos on WayForward’s upcoming DuckTales Remastered. Scrooge still played like he always did in the original, fighting back using the Pogo cane and swinging it like a golf club. The stage shown above is Transylvania. WayForward’s interpretation of the game puts some context as to why Scrooge’s nephews are scattered all over the castle. We also see a little bit of the boss fight against Magica. Ahem… pardon my lack of professionalism (and constant fellating of Dragon’s Crown). So then, it’s confirmed that the artbook Japanese gamers get when they pre-order Dragon’s Crown will also be available for U.S. fans as well. Judging from the image above, it looks to be a soft cover if the the sort of “depth” of the spine is anything to go by.
Vanillaware games have been really deserving of an artbook, and and we’re finally getting one. Along with George Kamitani’s art and concepts, other popular artists have contributed to the book too with their interpretations of the Dragon’s Crown cast. They include Code of Princess artist Kinu Nishimura, Darkstalkers artist Akira Yasuda (aka Akiman), and Street Fighter/MvC veteran artist BENGUS.
With the might of a hundred clasping fists, I raise my hand in the air with absolute jubilee! Last year came news that the original Gameboy Color game Shantae might come to the 3DS virtual console. Wayforward’s Matt Bozon confirmed today via Twitter that the it will be released this summer. “Shantae Virtual Console update: looks like mid June-early July. Will keep you posted!” the tweet reads. This comes as WayForward continues to kick much ass on Nintendo’s handheld, prepping Mighty Switch Force 2 and Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse.
This also comes as the equally expensive Earthbound was announced for the Wii U’s virtual console last week. If you traverse the secondhand market regularly, you’ll see that prices for these games tend to be very high. Shantae here was one of the last GBC games released, becoming rare right from the get-go. The asking price on eBay usually hovers around $200, sometimes even higher. Amazon is no better. Keeping the price up was most likely the lack of any kind of re-release of this game (like Earthbound). There’s also the fact that most emulators can’t handle Shantae, with the only compatible one (that I know of) being rather terrible.
Hopefully this should drop those physical prices down hard, should you decide to go that route. I’ll be playing this on my shiny new 3DS XL!
Some time last week, it was revealed that Armature Studios were working on a gritty reboot of Mega Man X. Armature Studios is comprised of former Retro Studios employees who left after Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Now given that pedigree alone, it’s a shame that their MMX game, codenamed “Maverick Hunter”, got the boot. I mean, these are the Metroid Prime guys. They turned a revered 2D action/adventure game into an FPS that had a good blend of action, platforming, and atmosphere — all staples of the Metroid series. Plus, like Mega Man, Samus had a pea-shooting armcannon and it stayed a pea-shooting armcannon in the transition. The game was in good hands.
Then you look images of the game they were making. And then the footage that’s leaked online. All I can say is, it’s probably a good thing that Maverick Hunter was cancelled.
Well holy damn, who’d-a thought Duck Tales would be seeing a remake? Okay everyone wanted to see a remake, but Disney’s stance on their old Capcom-developed NES games was an unwavering “don’t care” or silence. For this remake, Capcom’s tapping into their old buddies WayForward, who previously published the first Shantae on Gameboy Color.
The reveal trailer starts off very serious, with quotes pulled from some of the game industry’s biggest creators. Then that ever catchy theme song starts up an plays in its entirety. While this ear-worm plays, we see some gameplay footage, and ohhhhh man I’m liking what I see. Much of what made the original NES game a hit is intact. Pogo-cane jumping, golf-club swinging, and then some. Many enemies make a return too with some amusing KO animations, like the mummy unraveling before falling off-screen. There’s also some locales I don’t remember seeing in the original NES game (or maybe it’s been so long that I don’t remember). I wonder how WayForward will handle The Moon Theme. Anyway, I’ll shut up and let you enjoy the trailer, unless you already watched it.

Got a pair of Capcom news to share. First up, Capcom VP Christian Svensson is hoping for Capcom to create an Ace Attorney Collection for the 3DS. “I have proposed this many times over the past two years… no news yet though. Hang in there,” is what he said on the Unity forums’ “Ask Capcom” section in a thread simply titled “Ace Attorney Collection for 3DS?” Given that Capcom released Ace Attorney Trilogy for iOS devices, it seems plausible to release something like this on the 3DS. Maybe not the whole series so far (which includes Miles Edgeworth and Apollo Justice), but at least the trilogy. Still, as Svensson says, “Hang in there.”
Next is the revelation of Gun.Smoke getting rated for release on Nintendo eShop. The game was an overhead shump game set in the wild west. The game was originally an arcade game and was released 1985, then released on multiple consoles, most notably on the NES in 1988. It’s not known if the one coming the 3DS will be the NES version or the Arcade version as there’s many differences between the two. Given that Capcom is releasing arcade classics under its Arcade Cabinet line, it could be the Arcade version. The ESRB rating shows the game as getting released on the 360, PS3, Vita, and Nintendo 3DS.
Today marked the next step in the transition to the Next Generation. Sony revealed the much rumored PlayStation 4, the successor to the PS3. In the conference they revealed the Dualshock 4, a controller similar to the Dualshocks before it, only this time sporting a front-facing touchpad similar to the back-facing Playstation Vita. Sony also revealed its plans to utilize cloud services thanks to its purchasing of Gaikai. Above all, they showed off the games that they’ll be bringing to the table when the PS4 launches this holiday, 2013. After the break, a visual rundown of what went down during the conference.

On Friday, February 8, 2013, one of the most popular and most polished fangames in the brony community, MLP: Fighting is Magic, was served a cease and desist order from Hasbro, the makers of the My Little Pony franchise. It caused a massive ripple effect across both the brony community and the fighting game community. Mane6, the developers of Fighting is Magic, took steps to make sure that they would be in good standing with Hasbro when they started developing the game in 2011, namely by not profiting off the game and not accepting any donations from fans. Any donations that were brought up from tournaments went straight to charity. They stated this on their FAQ page when it was still up. While it was believed that Hasbro had no problem with the game (FAQ gone to confirm this), last Friday’s event proved otherwise.
So once again the topic of fangames has hit the forefront of the gaming periphery. Fangames are a form of expression, a way of showing adoration for a show/videogame/movie you like. In other words, it is another form of fanart. Unlike the typical form fanart – the most common being drawings – fangames take more time to make and are generally much lower in quantity. But, like some fanart, many fangames tend to be rather amateurish and crude, either making something poorly from scratch or poorly reusing assets from other games. But there are some out there that excel beyond the norm, creating new content or using currently available assets and making something equal to or beyond the quality of the original. It’s these games though that tend to get the dreaded cease & desist order, with companies fearing it being a little too close to their product.
The localization wave is riding high as now comes word that Project X Zone will be coming to the U.S. Developed by Namco Bandai, Project X Zone sees the universes and characters of SEGA, Namco, and Capcom clashing, wondering what the hell is going on. We’ve covered this game quite a bit here on The Wired Fish, and the collective over at 100,000 Strong To Localize Project X Zone took to Twitter to ask Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada to pitch the game to the higher ups at Namco to localize the game. Then came word that if the game did well in Japan, it’d be localized. Looks like the efforts worked as now the game will be getting released in the U.S. after all.
Project X Zone is a SRPG in the same style of Super Robot Wars and prequel Namco X Capcom. You move units across a grid and engage other units. When the attacking phase begins, the action shifts to a 2D perspective and encourages to unleash all of the special attacks at your disposal. All you rare game collectors, listen up! Over at Capcom-Unity, user Versus Omnibus had inquired if it was possible to play Tatsunoko vs. Capcom on the Wii U. Two users, one of them a moderator, told Omnibus that the Wii U will be backwards compatible with all Wii games, accessories, and peripherals. Then Capcom exec Christian Svensson stepped in and kinda misunderstood the question and though it was about a re-release. He states “Our rights with Tatsunoko have lapsed fairly recently (so we’re no longer allowed to sell the title physically or digitally). Unless Japan were to strike a new deal, I’d say the chances of this happening are slim.”
So not only can Capcom not make a Wii U re-release in HD, they can’t even sell the current Wii game now due to rights issues. So if you haven’t gotten the game yet, it’s best to do it now since the prices might rise up. And to those that have it already, hold on tight to it ’cause you ain’t seeing a “new” copy anytime soon. They’re not expensive now, but they will be, just like Metroid Prime Trilogy.
Today was the second day of New York Comic-Con, and we wrapped of Comics Week yesterday. We kicked it off with some Maximum Carnage. Then we tagged in Captain America with Marvel vs. Capcom. We died a lot to the rockin’ tunes of Silver Surfer. We punched fools in the face with Batman on the NES. And finally, we punched more fools in the face to the tunes of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Given Capcom’s propensity to crossover with many franchises (it even has its own Trope page), a Capcom crossover game where Capcom characters fight themselves wouldn’t seem too far off. Hell, Nintendo’s done it. Even Capcom had something like this with Capcom Fighting Evolution, though many agree that game was an absolute mess. But Capcom’s a bit wiser on the fighting games (though most lack content lately), so maybe now’s their chance to try that route again? Well, Christian Svensson tried pitching it, and it wasn’t swaying any execs. “I’ve pitched Capcom vs. Capcom a few times internally” said Svensson in an interview with Rohan Mayers of Capcom Unity. “It’s never really found traction though among the producers or with marketing.” Svensson does stress that either way their”…fighting resources are being utilized on other projects right now so it’ll be some time before such a thing could really be considered for greenlight.”
Well, that’s nice to hear. At least we know those producers and marketers don’t see much happening with a fighting game, yet think a smartphone Capcom crossover game will win over fans.
After being critically hammered, the last thing Capcom wants to do is make Resident Evil 6 less enticing. But in comes word that Resident Evil 6 has on-disc DLC, a practice that has proved very controversial this year after Street Fighter X Tekken was revealed to have over 12 characters locked behind a pay-gate. YouTube user FluffyQuack was modding his disc when he uncovered several bits of content already on the disc. The only full piece of content on the disc is a new difficulty mode called No Hope, which is harder than Professional. The rest is partially on the disc. These include 2 map packs, 4 new multiplayer modes, and an a Co-op mode for Ada’s campaign. The Multiplayer modes are called Onslaught, Survivors, Predator, and Siege. Fluffy points out that some of the info other sites are reporting are wrong, like costumes and taunts. He sates that some of these, while on the disc, don’t seem to be locked behind a pay-gate but through normal gameplay (A and S Ranking Mercenary maps with each character) and unlocked via RE.net. The only items players may have to pay for is what’s mentioned in the previous paragraph. Capcom reached out to Eurogamer to clarify that some of the data is on the disc to ensure compatibility and that “there will be one piece of content, that for technical reasons, requires the use of a combination of newly downloaded data and data that is included on the retail game disc.” If that’s the case, then maybe they should’ve stuck to that original release date in November to, y’know, finish it.
