Megaman X Confirmed for UMvC3! …As A Costume

Imagine the look on my face when I saw none other than Megaman X in a thumbnail on Facebook, linking to Capcom’s Unity page. It was of joy and glee… which soon turned to pessimism. It’s no secret that much of us on TWF haven’t been liking Capcom lately, what with UMvC3, Megaman Legends 3 getting cancelled, RE: The Mercenaries 3D having that stupid DRM, and putting that… thing on Street Fighter X Tekken. But this, this takes the whole damn cake son!  Many have clamored, emailed, and begged for some kind of Megaman to be put in this game. We would get over the fact that we’d be ripped off anyway. But make no mistake: This is not Megaman X. It is a costume for Zero! So you mean to tell me that Capcom was able to put the damn model in the game but notmake him en entirely new character? *woosa*

Well, al least we know they still have some form of care for the blue bomber. And there’s some other costumes for Trish, Hawkeye, and Taskmaster if you’re interested in those. But come the hell on!?

Disney Acquires UTV, Fate Of Ignition Entertainment Unknown

Uh-oh. Disney’s hungry, and it want to nibble on a bit of India. UTV is known for making TV shows and films in India. But to us, they’re the guys that own Ignition Entertainment, the publishers of Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Dragon’s Crown, and Deadly Premonition as well as the developers of El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. BBC reports that Disney saw the opportunity to increase their presence in India when they noticed that UTV had shares that they didn’t own, and seized a controlling portion of UTV. Once the acquisition is finished, Disney will delist UTV from the Bombay Stock Exchange. So far a brand name change is unknown. As for Ignition, this could be wither good or bad. Good because Disney could finance them after a rough 2011. Bad because Disney might either let them go to fend for themselves, or just shut them down, leaving the fate of PSV/PS3 game Dragon’s Crown‘s western release up in the air.

The Last Story English Trailer

And finally there’s a trailer for Mistwalker’s The Last Story with English voices. Since the primary market for the PAL release is European (obviously), the voices here are British, just like Xenoblade. Of course I have no problem with it, at all. And they seem to fit even more too, especially for the Lowell character (uh, no offense), even though we don’t hear his voice. Regardless, The Last Story is scheduled for release in Europe on February 24, with Australia getting it a day before. And remember, Xenoblade graces our shores on April 6th.

THQ Makes 170 People’s Jobs Go *Poof*

It just hasn’t been THQ’s week. First there’s the report that because of the poor sales of their equally poor uDraw tablet, THQ would be shuttering their kids division, thus nixing development on E-rated titles (and pretty much developing on the Wii). This after such a huge marketing push of the uDraw, and noticing that their more mature titles were selling higher than the stuff they were pumping out for kids. Soon after that, they closed out the day at 70 cents a share on the stock market. Ouch. Nasdaq then threatened to de-list them from the stock exchange. And now comes news that THQ will be handing pink slips to over 170 employees. So far no one knows if those 170 people are from the Kids Division of THQ or the part of the company that makes Saints Row and Metro.

While we hope this won’t be the case, an entire closure of THQ feels imminent. If not, then expect a major reshuffling of the company (if an ex-employee of THQ spilling the beans is anything to go by) and more safer-to-sell games coming out of THQ.

New 2D Sidescroller Mario In The Works, Might Have DLC Stages

During an investor meeting, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata mentioned that a new Super Mario games was in development, this time being in 2D like the DS and Wii New Super Mario Bros. He also touched upon the possibility of Super Mario being a good place to add DLC stages. Obviously pricing hasn’t been talked about yet, nor how many stages would be available per pop. Hopefully these’ll be new stages and not stuff already on the cart. Iwata hopes to release the game in the next fiscal year.

Here’s hoping for some asshole-level difficult stages. One of the primary reasons why I liked NSMBWii, Mario Galaxy 2, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. Bring it on Nintendo!

MMOFPS Hits World Record of 999 Players

You’re not reading that wrong. That’s nine-hundred ninety-nine players. Just shy of one-thousand players. The game in question is Man Vs. Machine, a game developed by MuchDifferent. Looking more like an experiment than a full-on game, Man Vs. Machine places players in one of two roles: Man or Machine. There’s only one map, one weapon, what looks to be a couple of visors, and a shitload of players against each other. The 1000-player matchup splits the teams in half. 500 for the humans, and 500 for the machines. You can see how many are playing at once at any time. Once you’re spawned, madness ensues as bombs explode in the distance and lasers zip by you. It’s a beautiful thing to behold. Some of the comments the players make are pretty funny (you’ll have to change the resolution to 480p). Today’s tech ain’t quite ready for something like this as the graphics, weapon variety, and models are sparse in this game to accommodate so many people playing all at once. But just thinking about where multiplayer will eventually go might get some out there mighty giddy.

Just think, a medieval game that plays like this. Or even better, Dynasty Warriors!

Silent Hill HD Collection Releases March 2012

The Silent Hill HD Collection collects two titles in the Silent Hill Franchise: Silent Hill II: Restless Dreams and Silent Hill III.  These titles are both remastered in HD quality (720p) and also feature redone voice acting and musical score enhancement.  Fans of the series are on both sides regarding the new voice acting for Restless Dreams.  These changes were the reason the release date was delayed although it seems that the developers actually paid attention to their fans.  Restless Dreams now has the option for the old and new voice acting while Silent Hill III only has the redone voice work.

I am happy to hear that there is a HD Collection title from a great survival horror franchise but the collection itself seems incomplete. Normally collections comprise of three games such as Konami’s recent Metal Gear Solid HD Collection but there are only two titles.  A HD port of Silent Hill I is probably a more difficult project than an upscaled PS2 title but it would’ve been nice if Konami included another game like Team Silent’s Silent Hill IV: The Room. Including a copy of the PSOne version of Silent Hill I is also a possibility but defeats the purpose of a “HD” collection.

The HD Collection is slated for released on March 6, 2012, a week before the release of Silent Hill Downpour, for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. Below is the official trailer for the collection:

Note: The retail price is $39.99 but GameStop’s website has it for $49.99 with no bonus. Your best bet is Amazon or any other retailer with the retail price.

New Xbox To Deny Used Games?

No one knows for sure, but it’s one hell of a ball to drop if the rumors turn out to be true. According to Kotaku, a “trusted source” told Kotaku that along with the next Xbox supporting Blu-Ray and a new Kinect, the system would reject used games if the player happened to put one in. A rep emailed Kotaku later on with the usual PR bullcrap and dodging the speculation with, “Beyond that we don’t comment on rumors or speculation.” If the the no-used game feature is true, services like Gamestop and GameFly would suffer immensely, GameFly especially. Since this generation began, publishers has been fighting tooth and nail to halt the selling of used games with DRM, Online Passes, or simply skipping retail and selling online only. This would be the first time in consumer electronic history that used products would be banned.

Executive Meddling Adds Online Pass To Twisted Metal

Online passes are some of the most unfair things you can add to your game. While I’ve rarely sold/gave away any game I had (the most I’ve given away was 3 my whole life), I’m certain this is something that would concern anyone with the trigger finger to sell their own games on a constant basis, or buy used games a lot. David Jaffe, creator of Twited Metal, said that he wouldn’t want an online pass in his game considering how much of an emphasis the game has on multiplayer. However in the end, it was Sony that made him put the online pass, and he made it clear that it wasn’t his company, Eat Sleep Play, that made the decision. Big ups to Jaffe for thinking about the little guy. But damn Sony, damn.

My Little Pony takes over Skyrim, beware of Fluttershy!

Hide your children, the ponies are coming! A recent mod for Skyrim changes all the dragons in the game into ponies from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. To be more specific, the dragons have now become a legion of Fluttershy that bring destruction to any and all who cross their path.

I have to admit, while I’m not a pc gamer, this is one of the main attractions of pc gaming in my book. I really like the notion of random user-generated mods and content that can be creative, fun, and add more replayability to titles. f you’d like the mod for yourself, you can find it here. But you must excuse me for now, I have to go back to watching Fluttershy burn down some towns.

Resident Evil 6 Announced, Hachi Resolves to Get His Evil From Foreign Distributors

Behold, the horrors of Resident Evil h!...I mean 6!

Source: IGN

Earlier this week, news broke about a teaser site that, in all likelihood, was to build interest for the new Resident Evil game. And lo and behold, here we are, a new one announced and on the horizon.

From what little was gleaned from the site, the game is set ten years after the Raccon City incident. Seeing that people are getting a little too loose with the bioweapons again, The President of the United States (also known as the man who gave us that BITCH Ashley) has decided that revealing the horrors that occurred in that fateful affair might help to curb the resurging bioterrorist tendencies of the world around them, and he calls his old pal (and RE2 and RE4 protagonist) Leon S. Kennedy to be with him when he makes the announcement. This being a “not terribly pleasant” game, something goes wrong, the president is “transformed beyond recognition” and shit goes down.

Of course, all of that could have been avoided with the RIGHT man in office. Mechs trump bioterror any day...

Check out the opening to Heroes Phantasia, Namco Bandai’s anime crossover RPG

Heroes Phantasia, what I had though to be a new Tales game upon first hearing the name, is a crossover RPG for the PSP featuring characters from several different anime such as Slayers, Mai-HiME, Blood+, Darker Than Black, and more. You can look at the game’s introduction video below, which contains animation done by Bones, Production I.G, Sunrise, and J.C., and see which series you recognize.

Still, I can’t believe I haven’t heard of this game until today! Due to all the copyrights involved, I doubt a stateside release would have a high chance of occuring, but I can still hope. I really enjoyed Mai-HiME and have fond memories of watching it with a couple of my anime-loving friends, so getting an RPG with characters from that, as well as Slayers and the like, would be pretty awesome. Heroes Phantasia is set to be released on January 19th in Japan.

Sumioni, Where Okami Meets Muramasa [UPDATE]

The other day when I was lurking around, I noticed a certain blog talking about another Vita game coming out. I saw the image of the princess that they posted, and I thought “Huh, this kinda looks like Okami, but with a little bit of Muramasa thrown in.” So I investigated what Sumioni was. I came away very impressed with what I saw. If you look at the trailer above, you’ll see that not only does it resemble Okami with the visuals, but it too has a “Celestial Brush”- like mechanic. But like Muramasa, combat is fast paced and is done in 2D. What I really like is how you’re actually writing out the Kanji characters for certain techniques, unlike the abstract shapes and lines like you did in Okami. Being done by Acquire, Sumioni is slated for release on the Playstation Vita sometime in 2012. No release date is set for NA, but it looks likely according to the developer. Nevermind. Sony has just confirmed it is coming to the US. I switched the above video for the NA version. Original trailer here.

Location Test Footage of P4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena

I don’t care how many times I do these articles, I’m not calling P4: The Ultimate “P4U.” It just sounds dirty. Anyway, here we have footage of a location testing (or “Loketest”) of Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena. Here we have a fight between Kanji and my homegirl Mitsuru. Things are still as fast as ever. One interesting thing that one of the youtube comments pointed out was that the blue bars under the life gauge have been changed to look like the backs of the Arcana cards from Persona 3&4. Pretty interesting. What other changes have you noticed? Point them out in the comments below.

Thanks to reader Brayan A. for the heads up.

Atlus Reveals Gungnir for PSP

After teasing the hell outta gamers with little hints of what they’ll be bringing to the U.S., Atlus has revealed the game to be the strategy RPG Gungnir. While being only the fourth game in the Dept. Heaven series of games by developer Sting, it’s actually the 9th episode of the whole series. I’m guessing they’re pulling a Star Wars and skipping some episodes. The Dept. Heaven series so far consists of Riviera: The Promised Land, Yggdra Union, and Knights in the Nightmare. Gungnir is slated for release on June 12, 2012 for the PSP. That up there is the announcement trailer/intro to the game.

Now get cracking! You got a new game to guess about!
