Picture if you will, two rivals, Nintendo and SEGA, in the middle of a very heated war of consoles. SEGA enjoyed the #1 spot after releasing their Genesis, competing against Nintendo’s NES. They steal not only Nintendo’s thunder, but third parties as well that had enough of Nintendo’s draconian bullshit during the 80s. They shelve Alex Kidd and replace him with the hip, the cool (and sometimes creepy), Sonic The Hedgehog. Nintendo, not willing to bow down, release the Super Nintendo. Now the companies are on even ground: two companies, two 16bit consoles, each with their strengths and weaknesses. Nintendo is pulling ahead and netting good game after good game from both them and third parties. A new format is on the rise: the CD. SEGA would invest money into it and make the SEGA CD add-on, with FMV games being their main push. Nintendo, they still got their cartridges, and still kicking ass. SEGA’s frustrated, as their CD format ain’t cutting it. So, they return to cartridge format and make the 32X, capable of rendering polygonal 3D graphics. Nintendo? They’re still sticking with their regular SNES cartridge. Not only that, they release this behemoth: Donkey Kong Country.

[NYCC] Hands-On With Zelda: Skyward Sword (2 Parts)
Several weeks ago at New York Comic-Con, The crew tried their hands at Nintendo’s latest entry in the Zelda series, Skyward Sword. Suikoinfinity and our buddy Osjua tried their hand at the Bird Race and Boss Battle demo, while Steven “DPX” tried the Dungeon demo the following day (with commentary help from Allison B., who we met at the Con). Hit the jump for the Dungeon demo video. Continue reading
[NYCC] Kirby Returns to Dreamland Hands-On Preview
Kirby returned to consoles after nearly a decade with Kirby’s Epic Yarn, and now he’s returning to Dreamland in his latest adventure. Watch as Prota (Kirby), Suikoinfiniy (King Dedede), Steven “DPX” (Meta Knight), and Hachi (Waddle Dee) wreck utter mayhem all over Dreamland. We’ll discuss our impressions of this game in a later article.
*sidenote: Our battery was low, so you won’t see the craziness that occurred once the footage was cut.
[NYCC] Sonic Generations 3DS Hands-On Preview
Before trying out the console version of Sonic Generations on Sunday, James tried out the 3DS version last Friday as New York Comic Con. The demo contain Sonic & Knuckles’ Mushroom Hill and Big Hand boss.
[NYCC] Shinobi Hands-On Preview
Witness Hachi try out the new Shinobi game coming out for the 3DS. From the looks of it, this game is going to live up to the ninja game= hard as hell trope, complete with precise mechanics, tough patterns, and background enemy tomfoolery. Also, listen as Steven “DPX” makes an ass of himself explaining this and be on the lookout for Prota’s random sniffing of Hachi.
[NYCC] Super-Mario 3D Land Hands-On 3-Part Preview
Mario finally makes his debut on the 3DS with Super Mario 3D Land. Suikoinfinity and Prota play the four stages of the demo. Part 1 is up there. Hit the break for part 2 and part 3.
[NYCC] Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Hands-On Preview
Here’s our only demo for the regular DS. Prota plays some Dragon Quest Monsters 2, a game that allows you to catch monsters, fight with them, and fuse them together to create new ones. If you’ve ever played Dragon Quest V, then think of the monster recruitment from that game, but expanded upon. If you haven’t played DQV, then you should! And as an added bonus, Steven the Slime makes his debut!
[NYCC] Mario Kart 7 Hands-On Preview
Here’s Steven “DPX” trying out Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS. Unfortunately, it looks like our camera girl kinda borked the recording as it seems like she thought she was recording, when in fact she wasn’t. The demo was 3 races long. All that was recorded here was the last lap of the last race.
[NYCC] Pokemon Rumble Blast Hands-On Preview
Here comes the first wave of videos we’ve done over the weekend at New York Comic-Con. Many laughs, many woahs, and many hurt feet were had at the convention. But all was good. Here’s Suikoinfinity trying out Pokemon Rumble Blast.
Henry Lewis: Pokemon Names “Are Actually Names of Demons”
…….I’m hyperventilating from the outright idiocy this man is spewing from his poisonous gob. I am trying my best to not punch my laptop clean through as I hear this man speak nonsense that even the most conservative Republicans would call crazy. Of course, many radical Christians have picked on Pokemon ever since the boom of it in the late 90s (god I feel old). Since then, Pokemon has popped up intermittently amongst Christian radicals, citing something random for corrupting youth. Lewis calls Pokemon “Oriental Demons.” Surely several Oni and Jaki will not take kindly for being mislabeled as Pokemon. Most mind numbing of all is that he says that the names of the Pokemon are actually names of demons. Um… Yeah. So Venusaur is demonic name, and not the combination of “Venus” and “Dinosaur.” Oh, and Rapidash is not the combination of “Rapid” and “Dash,” but is in fact a horse from hell. Gotcha boss….f*ckin’ idiot.
Zues help us if these crazy fools discover any game in the Shin Megami Tensei series (particularly Nocturne). Though I’d probably take pleasure in seeing what the hell these guys would have to say about it.
Top 10 N64 Games I Wished I Played In My Youth (And Still Haven’t!)
I’m not sure how many gamers there are like me, but I’ll come out and say it: I never owned an N64. Never had one, and not really planning to go out and own one. I grew up as a Playstation kid as the PS1 was the cheaper system when my mom went out and got me one. I think many gamers probably had the same predicament as me: we grew up poor or had parents that didn’t want to spend a lot of money on games (and instead give us lame Christmas socks and notebooks). But I don’t fault my family. I grew up on a console that was getting the RPGs and all the third party games. But still, there were quite a few things on the N64 that revolutionized the way we played videogames (like the joystick and Rumble Pak). I was able to play the N64 in my cousins’ house. But personally, as you already know, I never owned an N64. The only way I can “legally” play the games are on the Wii. But in hindsight, it’s still kinda sad knowing that I missed out on the happenings surrounding the system –in particular, the games. Before we begin, I have to set a criteria.
So without further ado, hit the jump button down there to see what games I missed out on.
Nintendo Announces 3DS Peripheral, Hachi’s Eyes Gleam With Interest…
Source: IGN
Being a relatively recent adopter of the 3DS (about a month now), I have become well acquainted with the system’s strengths and weaknesses. It has great graphical capabilities, fits pleasingly in the hands, has immense potential for future enjoyment (I’ve said as much in our podcasts) and genuinely feels like a “next-gen handheld”. On the other hand, it runs out of power at a moments notice, is currently bereft of many “Triple-A” games (although that is changing rapidly) and has finicky 3D that, although awesome when it works, will boil your viscous fluid inside your eyeballs if you hold it wrong. Operation Rainfall: “Go Buy Final Fantasy”
This is part of the second campaign they have prepared in trying to convince Nintendo to bring over Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora’s Tower. As mentioned almost two weeks ago, Operation Rainfall was going to ready another mailing campaign in which they’ll send letters to Nintendo again the day Xenoblade is released in Europe. Since then, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said that they’ll “be watching very closely what happens in Europe… Certainly if there are business opportunities and positive consumer uptake from some of those titles, that will be great data for us to consider as we look at what to do with these titles.” It somewhat falls in line with what Operation Rainfall wanted to do in their second phase in regards to increasing awareness of Xenoblade in Europe to make it a success.
So what of Final Fantasy? Well, Operation Rainfall is telling its supporters to go and buy the original Final Fantasy on the Wii Virtual Console, which costs 500 Wii Points. This is to show Nintendo that there is still a market for JRPGs. I can see their logic in telling its supporters to buy Final Fantasy as it’s one of the most well known J-RPGs out there. However, the one main flaw I see in that is that Final Fantasy, as a franchise, is pretty popular based on brand recognition alone and is not very niche like the Rainfall titles. Plus, the first Final Fantasy has been on so many platforms already, people are bound to already have it on one of them (I have it on PS1). In a sense, Final Fantasy has that somewhat Mario-like transcendence of genre to the point that those who don’t normally play JRPGs still play Final Fantasy (either that or they have no idea that Final Fantasy is a JRPG). A better idea would’ve been to tell supporters to buy a JRPG from the Virtual console rather than a specific one. Maybe compile a list of what is considered a JRPG, like Breath of Fire II or Ys Book 1 & 2 for example, and let supporters choose. Now it may be problematic as numbers would be sporadic amongst many titles rather than it being condensed into one title, thus having those sales be attributed to regular run-of-the-mill sales. If they really needed to choose one title, Final Fantasy wasn’t the answer.
The Wired Fish Podcast Episode 5
Do we have a treat for you today. In light of the recent events involving Capcom,
We’ve dedicated half the show time to talk about them. Regarding Capcom, we talk about the revelation of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the cancellation of Megaman Legends 3, and general issues with Capcom lately.
Afterwards, we talk indie games with this year’s Humble Indie Bundle. And finally, Nintendo’s in trouble 3DS doesn’t meet expectations, the Wii’s continues to experience a huge drought, and reports massive financial losses.
