New Shin Megami Tensei IV Trailer Released, Teases Link To Strange Journey

The 5/23 Japan release of Shin Megami Tensei IV  draws ever closer. With time comes more trailers for the game. Much of what is shown in this one is pretty much the same thing we’ve seen so far. Some new scenes are thrown in there, but the general message is nothing we haven’t heard before. There are two things that I did notice though. One is a demon stopping the fight to talk to you after you wipe out almost its whole team. A plea to come to a compromise to let it go, or a desire to join your ranks? Another interesting bit comes up around 3:29. Is that the armor from Strange Journey I see? Why yes, yes it is. Is this just a fanservice battle thrown in for the hell of it, or is there a legitimate link between SMT IV and Strange Journey? Well know for sure when the game releases.

No word yet if it’ll get localized for the West. Still, I have hope they’ll bring it over. So far most MegaTen games have gotten released here after Nocturne. Heck, they’re bringing over Devil Summoner Soul Hackers. They’re even reprinting both of those Raidou Kuzunoha games — for the PS2 no less! So I’m confident it’s coming over.

Jury Rules That Nintendo Infringed On Patent For Glasses-Free 3D

Nintendo Sued over 3D Patent

Nintendo’s had a good track record so far in beating these trials whenever someone came in to sue them over patent infringement. But that luck’s run out as Federal Jury ruled that Nintendo did in fact infringe on the patent for glasses-free 3D. The patent holder, Seijiro Tomita, was the one that sued Nintendo in 2011. Tomita brought up a meeting Nintendo had with him in 2003. Scott Lindvall, Nintendo’s defense attorney, pointed out that Nintendo’s meeting with Tomita was just one of the many meetings Nintendo had with multiple vendors, and not just Tomita.

Tomita is being awarded $30.2 million in compensatory damages. Nintendo however will not stop selling 3DS handhelds.

Nintendo Ad Campaigns Retrospective [2013 Edition]

Nintendo Ad Campaign Retrospective 2013[New to this edition is the addition of the Wii U campaign. Much of what was written from the previous edition is largely unchanged, save for some grammatical corrections that might’ve slipped by. Some parts might also have more info added. So sit back, relax, and read on.]

You have an idea for a product. You make the product. And now it’s time to sell the product. So what’s the one thing you’ll do to sell your product? Advertise it of course. This is pretty much the pattern that most product makers follow. In the game industry it’s no different. With catchy slogans, flashy graphics, and some off-the-wall shenanigans, an ad is supposed to convince you to buy the product they are selling. But ignoring all of the attempts to sell and actually looking at the ad, they always seem to be a product of the era that they were released in. So for this retrospective, we’re going to look at one of the longest living game companies, Nintendo, from when we played with power, to when we played it loud, to two guys asking us if Wii would like to play, to what we will play next.

Pandora’s Tower U.S. Trailer And New Release Date

Dubbed the black sheep of the Rainfall titles, Pandora’s Tower may very well be the last big release on the Wii. The company making the game, Ganbarion, doesn’t have the pedigree of Monolithsoft or Mistwalker, didn’t have stellar sales like Xenoblade and The Last Story, and critical reception was pretty average. However its premise and association with Operation Rainfall might make it a cult hit.

The story follows a girl, Elena, who has been cursed and is slowly turning into a monster. A soldier for the kingdom Athos, Aeron, takes Elena away from the festival they were in so that the townsfolk don’t kill her. In the trailer, we hear what Aeron has to do to lift the curse from Elena. We also get a glimpse of the relationship focus the game has with Elena questioning Aeron’s acceptance and love for her.

Pandora’s Tower was originally set to release on March 26th. However, according to Amazon,  it’s been delayed to some time between April 22nd-April 26th. A pretty far delay, but makes sense considering what’s getting released this month. It hurts a bit, but a wise move nonetheless.

Shin Megami Tensei IV Trailer Shows More Info On Battles, Fusions, Kickass Music, And A Release Date [English Subs Included!]

During the grand ol’ hullabaloo of PS4 Reveal, Nintendo was having a Nintendo Direct for the 3DS in Japan. Shin Megami Tensei IV was one of the games shown, and in it a plethora of info mainly regarding battles. Of course one of the biggest things many have noticed (for a while anyway) is a return to using a first person view for battles, a style that many MegaTen games have used. The battle system will be using the Press-Turn Battle system first seen in games like Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga. For those unaware, you get a certain amount of actions per turn. Say for instance you get four actions. You can spend those however you like. However you can get more actions by exploiting an enemy’s weakness, increasing your actions beyond four. Attack an enemy with an element they’re strong to, and you’ll lose an action. This system doesn’t just apply to the player though as the enemy can do the same to you and gain more actions per turn. Watch this video and you’ll see what I mean.

Yes, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem and “X” Are Getting Release In The U.S. (I Thought We Knew This Already)

SMT X FE

Several weeks ago Nintendo revealed in their Nintendo Direct presentation that they were collaborating with Atlus to make Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem. After the awesome as hell revelation, there was also the reveal of “X”, that secret project that Xenoblade developers Monolith Soft was making. For some reason, there were, and still are, quite a few that were fearful that these games wouldn’t get a U.S. release. I don’t blame them given the state of JRPGs in the U.S. lately (though it is improving). But c’mon, it’s pretty obvious that the U.S. is getting these games. I mean, 1) they were announced on a U.S. Nintendo Direct, and 2) in the case of SMT X FE, the logo for Shin Megami Tensei that is used in the trailer (pictured) is the western logo. If it was just confirmed for Japan, they would use Japanese logo instead. Also, the Fire Emblem logo is also the western one used for Fire Emblem Awakening.

Unless otherwise stated, these games are 100% confirmed coming to the U.S. You can put your fears to rest.

Fangames And C&Ds: What To Do About Them

Cancelled fangames (2)Disclaimer: The Wired Fish does not promote copyright/trademark infringement nor encourage it. We still recommend contacting the original content holders on projects you’ll be undertaking should the need arise, and to abide by the law if a Cease & Desist is sent. On Friday, February 8, 2013, one of the most popular and most polished fangames in the brony community, MLP: Fighting is Magic, was served a cease and desist order from Hasbro, the makers of the My Little Pony franchise. It caused a massive ripple effect across both the brony community and the fighting game community. Mane6, the developers of Fighting is Magic, took steps to make sure that they would be in good standing with Hasbro when they started developing the game in 2011, namely by not profiting off the game and not accepting any donations from fans. Any donations that were brought up from tournaments went straight to charity. They stated this on their FAQ page when it was still up. While it was believed that Hasbro had no problem with the game (FAQ gone to confirm this), last Friday’s event proved otherwise.

So once again the topic of fangames has hit the forefront of the gaming periphery. Fangames are a form of expression, a way of showing adoration for a show/videogame/movie you like. In other words, it is another form of fanart. Unlike the typical form fanart – the most common being drawings – fangames take more time to make and are generally much lower in quantity. But, like some fanart, many fangames tend to be rather amateurish and crude, either making something poorly from scratch or poorly reusing assets from other games. But there are some out there that excel beyond the norm, creating new content or using currently available assets and making something equal to or beyond the quality of the original. It’s these games though that tend to get the dreaded cease & desist order, with companies fearing it being a little too close to their product.

Night-Time Listenings Wrap-Up: Week of 1/28/13

Night-Time Listenings 30

Happy Late New Year! Well, I got a good month off from doing this segment, but it’s time Night-Time Listenings returned. And since this is a new year, let’s head to the future, all the way to the year of the futuristic racers. So all this week we payed homage to the Futuristic racer, which was filled with crunchy guitars, thumping basses, and speaker busting noises. Featured this week was F-ZERO, Extreme G, Kinetica, F-ZERO GX, and Wipeout HD Fury.

If you want to see the music as it goes up (and not wait every Saturday for these wrap-ups), remember to go to our Tumblr page and follow it. Music for Night-Time Listenings goes up every weekday at 10PM.

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem Announced

Woah. Um, ….woah. Did not see this coming at all. During a Wii U centered Nintendo Direct this morning, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced that Nintendo and Atlus were collaborating on a game. The trailer commenced with Shin Megami Tensei characters appearing on-screen. Looked normal. And then BAM, Fire Emblem characters! Now I’m very curious as to what exactly these two sides will bring to the table. Both franchises had their roots in being once Japan-Only titles and being RPGs. What could be more different from the two is one being much darker than the other. The stories of Shin Megami Tensei tend to deal with existential dilemmas, religion, and cast God as one big douchebag. Fire Emblem‘s plot varies from game to game, sometimes deals with a power struggle between kingdoms and a search for the titular Fire Emblem. And there’s also the game’s perma-death feature. Wonder if that’ll make it into this game.

One aspect I’m really curious about is the juxtaposition of the music from both franchises. Fire Emblem‘s music is known to have beautiful, sweeping orchestral arrangements, sometimes delving into more pounding rock-like compositions. SMT‘s music on the other hand is really dark with hard guitar riffs, odd voices (sometimes), and some pretty unnerving arrangements. You can even hear the difference in the trailer itself with the SMT characters being shown, followed by the Fire Emblem characters with their theme.
Gotta say, I’m pretty hyped!

Wii U – Shin-Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem Trailer

New Monolith Soft Game Revealed For Wii U, Likely A New Xeno Entry

This morning’s Nintendo Direct was full of surprises for Wii U owners. The Wii U-centric presentation revealed several new releases for the console that I’m sure will have owners and would-be owners foaming at the mouth, but one in particular just blew me and many other Xenoblade fans away.

Monolith Soft’s new unnamed Wii U title was revealed during Nintendo Direct with a trailer that gives us a small taste of what to expect. The gameplay and environment look extremely similar to Monolith Soft’s Xenoblade Chronicles, which was released on the Wii last year. Steven and I sung its praises during last week’s podcast, both dubbing it our game of the year. The red X that appears at the end of the trailer also resembles the Xenogears logo, which gives even more reason to believe this game is related to the Xeno series. Tetsuya Takahashi, who directed both Xenogears and Xenoblade, returns as director for this title, as well as character designer Kunihiko Tanako. I’m a little disappointed that Yoko Shimomura isn’t doing the soundtrack but, if the song from the trailer is anything to go by, Hiroyuki Sawano’s music sounds like it’s going to be amazing.

What really has me excited though is that Monolith Soft seems to be bringing back one of the best features of Xenogears, the ability to fight both inside and outside of a mech. This game seems to take it even further with being able to hover and transform into vehicles as well. And if the world is as vast and fun to explore as Xenoblade’s was, then I can only imagine what they have in store for players this time around now.

I’ve already re-watched that trailer more times than I care to admit, and it gives me chills each and every time. I have to say, this is the game that may convince me to get a Wii U. And even if it weren’t, there are plenty of other reasons for gamers to purchase one after today’s Nintendo Direct. For Nintendo, it looks like the gloves are coming off.

Super Smash Bros. And Playstation All-Stars: What Can They Learn From Each Other?

SSB and PSAS

As soon as Playstation All-Stars was announced and shown, the world erupted into what could be called a fanboy clusterfuck. While other games using the Smash Bros. formula have popped-up, most notably Jump Superstars, They’ve not garnered the vitriolic fervor that PSAS has gained. Being the level-headed console/pc agnostic I am, I was curious what developer Superbot would pull off. Super Smash Bros. has been largely uncontested in this genre of fighter, so seeing Playstation All-Stars, at first party attempt, appear as a contender can only be seen as a good thing for both games. As they say, competition breeds quality that is passed on to the consumer. And now that we have the console giants duking it out, what can these two games learn from each other?

Pandora’s Tower Confirmed For U.S. Release, Courtesy of XSEED

Pandora's Tower release

Just when you thought all hope was lost for Pandora’s Tower after the release of the Wii U, XSEED comes in to save the day. Previously, XSEED brought over The Last Story. Pandora’s Tower is an action RPG with heavy puzzle elements. The story follows a woman named Elena who, during a festival, succumbs to a curse that slowly starts turning her into a monster. Aeron, Elena’s love interest, takes her away to avoid being killed by the town guards. Mavda, a witch, takes them to a place called The Scar, with contains different towers attached by large chains. It’s here where they are toled that Elena must eat the hearts of the monsters Aeron kills to keep the transformation at bay. And yes, you see her eat the hearts, which rest assured look none too appetizing.

Pandora’s Tower is the third and final game left in the Operation Rainfall campaign to bring Nintendo’s JRPGs stateside. Of the three titles (the other two being Xenoblade and The Last Story), Pandora’s Tower was the black sheep of the bunch, receiving Average reviews and selling the least worldwide. Not having the acclaim of the the other two, begging for a U.S. release of this one looked hopeless. Even OpRainfall was caught by surprise. With the release of the Wii U, Nintendo had pretty much stopped support of the original Wii, making a U.S. release of this game even less likely. And now? Well what can I say? XSEED gained a whole boatload of respect from JRPG fans. And OpRainfall? Mission Accomplished.

Pandora’s Tower is set for a Spring 2013 release.

Pokemon Finally Goes 3D With Pokemon X And Y

Probably since Pokemon Stadium back on the N64, Pokemon fans have wanted to see a full-fledged 3D Pokemon game. Time and again however, they’ve only been teased by the allure of 3D Pokemon with games like Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon Battle Revolution, both of which were largely about battling and not catching and exploration. XD: Gale of Darkness was the closest the series would get to a 3D RPG of Pokemon. But that’s all about to change as now Pokemon has finally entered the 3D realm. With the tech finally up to snuff with the 3DS, a 3D Pokemon game looked possible now. And now we have Pokemon X and Y.
