The Captains Speaketh: Nintendo Losing Their Touch

Editor’s Note: We collaborated on this latest Speaketh before Nintendo did their Nintendo Direct not too long ago. However our arguments still stand.

So E3 has come and gone, and there are a few things that surprised us, some things that lulled us, and some that made us go “What?” But one thing that seems to have drawn the most confusion is Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS Conferences. Nintendo, like the others played it safe — very safe — during their conferences. However, in their aim to cater to the hardcore audience that they seemed to have lost, they let two games slip by that seemed to cater to just that audience.

E3 2012 Nintendo Press Conference Liveblog

Last year Nintendo revealed their next console, the Wii U, which garnered mixed reactions from many a gamer. Rumors have circulated over the specs of the console. Some developers have said that the console is just as powerful as the 360 and PS3. Other have said it even more powerful than both. Then come the leaked picture of the updated Wii U Tablet Controller. On the games side, we got Xenoblade! And we’re getting The Last Story later this month courtesy of XSEED. What of the fate of Pandora’s Tower? What will Pikmin 3 look like? Will there be a Starfox game by Platinum Games? Will there be a crossover of Starfox and Metroid by Retro Studios? All will be known today.

Liveblog and Press Conference start at 12 Noon EDT.

E3 2012 Sony Press Conference Liveblog

Last year, Sony had to deal with the biggest security hacks in U.S. history. With that event long behind them, it’s time to look at the future. The Ps3 is still performing strong. But their Playstation Vita handheld is not quite performing as well as Sony predicted. Some weeks ago, we saw Sony reveal Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, which sparked what may be the most heated debate in recent gaming memory. Now there are rumors that Sony would reveal the PS4, codenamed Orbis (with rumors that it too would block used games). What does Sony have planned for their wacky world of Playstation?

E3 2012 Microsoft Press Conference Liveblog

Ahoy and welcome one and all to the Microsoft Press Conference Liveblog. Last year Microsoft showed off more things to do with the Kinect and surprised the world with the reveal of Halo 4. They’ve showed off the new features that would be coming to Xbox 360. As the days got closer, the rumors were running rampant with some saying that Microsoft would show off a new console (and block used games). Today is judgement day. All the rumors will be cleared and the future of Microsoft will be revealed.

The Wired Fish Podcast Season 2 – Episode 5

Here we are. We’ve finally made it to the end of the second season. Like Hachi warned you in the beginning, this season was going to be short. The Winter breaks are shorter than the Summer breaks, thus the season is shorter. Why’d this take so long? Well, you figure that out! We’ve got topics to talk about! First up, we talk about Mass Effect 3’s ending. Then we discuss Capcom’s woes with Street Fighter X Tekken and the On-Disc Characters being locked away by a pay-gate. And finally, the rumors surrounding the Playstation Orbis concerns us.

You know the drill. Topic Table of Contents after the break.

The Wired Fish Podcast Season 2 – Episode 4

Ahoy! After a long, long bout of bad luck with health (damn you flu!), Episode 4 of the Podcast has finally set sail. On this episode, we talk about AMY, how bad the reviews of it are, and reminisce about what makes survival horror scary. Then, we look back on the history of Hudson and other companies that have fallen since the start of this generation. And finally, we cover the resurgance of so-called “Game of the Year/Complete” editions of games and why this might be bad for the industry.

Timestamp table of contents after the break.

The Wired Fish Podcast Season 2 – Episode 3

Ahoy Fellow Fishes! Another week, another podcast goes up. Actually… several weeks… for this episode anyway. But I digress. On this episode of the Podcast, we look back on what made us sad pandas in 2011. Then we talk about what we’re anticipating the most in 2012. And finally what we see as our Games of the Year for 2012. This episode is extra long, so for your convenience we’ve split this episode into two parts. After the break, Part 2 and timestamp table of contents.

The Captains Speaketh – New Review Format

Hello everybody, and welcome to the great big review policy discussion. Since it would be best to write reviews that we can add to the big review databases in the internet for exposure, naturally the first thing to discuss would be our review policy.

The reason that I want this to be in conversation form, of course, is because we have no single review structure, and thus, the way each of us rate our games will be entirely different because of the different contexts that they are placed in. Thus, I ask you all this to begin : What is your criteria for ranking a game?

The Wired Fish Podcast Season 2 – Episode 2

Ahoy Fellow Fishes. This week is half SOPA, half retro. Because of how close the ruling of Protect IP is, and the protests and blackouts against PIPA and SOPA, the time has come for us to finally talk about the two and how catastrophic these bills are. On a lighter note, we resume our regular wackiness with retro stuff and what we grew up with as kids.

[MAJOR UPDATE 1] As of this time, ruling of PIPA has been postponed indefinitely. Ruling of SOPA has been shelved indefinitely. The battle may be over, but the war is still on. We want these two bills to be killed off completely. From the looks of it, the authors of both bills are hoping to postpone it long enough to try passing it without the public noticing. However, we were able to catch these bills as they were flying through Congress and stop them in their tracks. We can do it again!

[MAJOR UPDATE 2] After the indefinite postponing of the two bills, the ESA had dropped support of the bills. While it’s awesome and all, it’s somewhat meaningless now. In light of all this, I guess your can kinda skip the first half. But I still recommend watching just to see how bad these bills are. But if you’ve had your fill of SOPA and PIPA, you can hit the break to see which time to skip to.

As usual, timestamp table of contents after the break.

SOPA/Protect IP Battle – Round 2

Huh, we seem to back in this. Back in November, websites all around had censored their names in protest of two pieces of legislation. Today, Jan. 18, 2012, some websites have outright shut down in protest. Some have chosen to remain online, but make it clear that they are in protest, like Google. I’ve gone to some sites today and have received 503 errors. Our platform, WordPress, has censored out articles on their home in protest as well. Our latest episode of TWFP has half the episode dedicated to talking about SOPA and Protect IP. That will be put up Tomorrow.

Since November, we’ve gotten a better idea of who’s for and against SOPA. For game companies, you already know that Capcom supports it, saying that the “ESA represents us in these matters” and the ESA supports SOPA (fuck what Svensson says). However, some companies that are part of the ESA have come out against SOPA and Protect IP, including Epic Games and, more recently, Nintendo and Sony. Microsoft, Zynga, Notch, and others have joined the fight against SOPA and Protect IP. The bill’s writer, Lamar Smith, put on his slick-bastard hat and postponed the SOPA hearing until February, in hopes that the hype behind the Super Bowl will distract the public. Yes, it’s during the weekend and Congress doesn’t do weekends. But to put in perspective, in Japan, that didn’t stop Ishihara from passing a manga censorship bill when Japan was still suffering from the Earthquake and Tsunami last year. Mr. Smith is hoping to pull a Ishihara to get SOPA passed. Make it loud and clear to him that we won’t stand for hit bullshit!

I highly recommend that you got to americancensorship.org and email your representatives and senators and let your voice be heard. If you’re a New York City resident, there is a protest happening today in front of the offices of Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. Both of them support the two bills. If you wish to join, RSVP and head on out there! If you want to know more, Gizmodo has a great rundown of how crappy this bill is. KYM also has one too (though you’ll have trouble going there today). Jason Harvey of Reddit also breaks down some of the terminology of the bills and how it could affect the infrastructure of the internet. Stuttering Craig from ScrewAttack and Daniel Floyd and James Portnow from Extra Credits have taken a stance against Protect IP and SOPA and have posted a message stating that if ESA continues to support the two bills, they will not attend nor cover E3, the ESA run and funded games convention.

Don’t let these bills pass! All of your favorites websites, including us, will fold under these two bills.

The Wired Fish Podcast Season 2 – Episode 1

Ahoy Fellow Fishes! Here arrives the glorious return of The Wired Fish Podcast. Quite a few things have happened since our Summer recordings and it’s time to talk about some of them. First up is the fan backlash that occured with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Next is some quickshots on The Last Of Us, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem 3DS, and Pokemon + Nobunaga’s Ambition. After that is the scandal surrounding Ocean Marketing and Paul Christoforo. And finally Christmas gifts The Captains received. Sit back and enjoy the show.

The Captains Speaketh: Should Final Final Fantasy VII Be Remade?

In the wake of remakes, reboots, and HD ports that have found their way into this generation, many gamers have made a wishlist of sorts, pertaining to what they want revisited. However, one game that had drawn the most requests has to be Final Fantasy VII. Propelling the PS1, and RPGs, into mainstream popularity, many gamers have heralded Final Fantasy VII as one of best, if not the best, game ever created. Several Final Fantasies, a movie, an anime, and much corporate whoring later, Square shows off the now infamous tech demo for the PS3 in which they recreated the opening scene of Final Fantasy VII. The gaming public loved the hell out of this, but at the same time was upset that this vision of FFVII would be confined to being a mere tech demo. They wanted a full game, something that Square has said time and again that they had no plans for. And now, after the polarizing Final Fantasy XIII and the abysmal Final Fantasy XIV, fans are begging for a remake. Hit the Jump to see what we think Square should do in regards to remaking Final Fantasy VII. Continue reading

Protect IP Act/SOPA Must Not Pass, Will Cripple The Internet

Fellow Fishes, we’ve come today to discuss a serious topic. A bill titled “Protect IP Act,” or PIPA, is being evaluated by Congress right now. They started hearings for the bill on Wednesday, November 16 (yesterday at the time of this article). There is another bill in congress, called “Stop Online Piracy Act,” or SOPA, that is meant to be combined with the PIPA bill. What these bill call for is basically for sites like BitTorrent or other sites like this that provide illegal content to be shut down. Thing is, these bills are too broad in defining what a “rogue” site is. Anyone can be defined as a “rogue.” The Entertainment Industry is the one that wants these bills to pass, for they feel DMCA is not enough for them. In trying to “Protect IP” and take down sites with copyrighted material on it, they will instead hurt the internet and what makes the internet awesome. Currently, under the DMCA, anyone who has copyrighted material on their site is given time to take down the offending material. The worse that could happen is you’d be fined. With PIPA and SOPA, it will be a felony to have a video of you singing karaoke, and be put in jail for 5 years. That’s right, you will be no better than that crackhead down the block, or that rapist on the loose. To make matters worse, these bills are set to fly through congress. This KYM article (and the video in it) can explain things in better detail.

While we at The Wired Fish don’t support piracy, this is not the way to combat it. Sites like 4chan, Know Your Meme, DeviantART, Wikipedia, Mozilla, Facebook, 9gag, Halolz, the Channel Awesome network, ScrewAttack, etc. would be affected, and even shut down. Youtube will be a largely different place to be in. NicoNico will be gone as quickly as they started. Let’s Players like Chuggaconroy and ProtonJon will be gone. Smaller sites like us would have to leave, and our videos taken away. These bills cannot pass!

Do your part and send a letter to congress (trust me it doesn’t take that long). These bills will change the internet as we know it, and it won’t be pretty. Do you want the internet to be like China’s? (no offense). Do you want the internet to be run by a bunch of little Shinra Corps.? Then stand up and knock this bill out. We got one bill knocked out. We can do it again!

[NYCC] Hands-On With Zelda: Skyward Sword (2 Parts)

Several weeks ago at New York Comic-Con, The crew tried their hands at Nintendo’s latest entry in the Zelda series, Skyward Sword. Suikoinfinity and our buddy Osjua tried their hand at the Bird Race and Boss Battle demo, while Steven “DPX” tried the Dungeon demo the following day (with commentary help from Allison B., who we met at the Con).
