I Stand On My Soapbox: The DKC3 Soundtracks

I Stand On My Soapbox is a series of editorials that cover more specific topics in the games industry and community. These articles are a little more extreme than normal editorials published here, and could just degenerate to outright ranting. Have fun and enjoy the show!

Ah Donkey Kong Country 3. Many consider this game the Super Mario Bros. 2 of the Donkey Kong Country series, the sort of outcast that not many people remember. I mean, it came off the heels of Donkey Kong Country 2, and was released the same year the N64 came out. Like its following and fan reaction, its soundtrack was met with… okay ratings. While there were some memorable tunes from this entry in the series, it was obvious that some was… missing. Maybe its because Eveline Fischer did most of the composing and not David Wise (no offense to Fischer). Maybe it’s the relatively new setting for the Kongs.Years later, facing audio issues for the GBA, Nintendo saw this and brought back David Wise to redo the entire soundtrack of DKC3 for its GBA release. And then… a fanbase split ensues!

The Cosplayers of New York Comic-Con

It’s time to take a break from the videos and look at the other attractions that populated Comic Con. No, it wasn’t all the free schwag we got (though we’ll be making an article about that later). It’s the cosplayers, and boy were there many. With the Jacob Javits Center packed to the brim with comic fans, animation and anime fans, and gamers (and nary a jock in sight), you were bound to bump into a cosplayer or two (or, say, seven). As many of you know, cosplay is serious business, and these people were ready to display the best of what they had. We have over 70 pictures, and you can view them all after the break! [NYCC] Hands On With Asura’s Wrath

Some call this the Asian God of War. Others call it “AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH,” Regardless, Asura’s Wrath, Capcom’s latest brawler, seems to be gaining some steam from its humble days during its reveal. From what the crew has played, we can see why.

[NYCC] Hands-On With Dragon’s Dogma

Suikoinfinity tries out this unique, almost Monster Hunter-like game from Capcom. Not much else to really say about this game.

[NYCC] Hands On With Street Fighter X Tekken

The crew plays two matches in Street Fighter X Tekken. It seems to fight exactly as you’d expect from the SF4 engine, with extra features inspired by Tekken Tag Tournament (and a little bit of Darkstalkers too!). Do mind the blurriness and the sudden jump cuts. Video conversions kinda dropped the vid feed (like in the Rauman Origins vid) and I had to cut them out. Apologies.

[NYCC] Hands On With Rayman Origins

The crew tries out a little bit of Rayman Origins. Things seem to go well at first, until they reach a point quite puzzling. Through some miracle, they make it through. And then… they break the game by accidentally activating the game’s Debug mode (toward the end). Enjoy

[NYCC] Kirby Returns to Dreamland Hands-On Preview

Kirby returned to consoles after nearly a decade with Kirby’s Epic Yarn, and now he’s returning to Dreamland in his latest adventure. Watch as Prota (Kirby), Suikoinfiniy (King Dedede), Steven “DPX” (Meta Knight), and Hachi (Waddle Dee) wreck utter mayhem all over Dreamland. We’ll discuss our impressions of this game in a later article.

*sidenote: Our battery was low, so you won’t see the craziness that occurred once the footage was cut.

[NYCC] Sonic Generations 3DS Hands-On Preview

Before trying out the console version of Sonic Generations on Sunday, James tried out the 3DS version last Friday as New York Comic Con. The demo contain Sonic & Knuckles’ Mushroom Hill and Big Hand boss.

[NYCC] Shinobi Hands-On Preview

Witness Hachi try out the new Shinobi game coming out for the 3DS. From the looks of it, this game is going to live up to the ninja game= hard as hell trope, complete with precise mechanics, tough patterns, and background enemy tomfoolery. Also, listen as Steven “DPX” makes an ass of himself explaining this and be on the lookout for Prota’s random sniffing of Hachi.

[NYCC] Super-Mario 3D Land Hands-On 3-Part Preview

Mario finally makes his debut on the 3DS with Super Mario 3D Land. Suikoinfinity and Prota play the four stages of the demo. Part 1 is up there. Hit the break for part 2 and part 3.

[NYCC] Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Hands-On Preview

Here’s our only demo for the regular DS. Prota plays some Dragon Quest Monsters 2, a game that allows you to catch monsters, fight with them, and fuse them together to create new ones. If you’ve ever played Dragon Quest V, then think of the monster recruitment from that game, but expanded upon. If you haven’t played DQV, then you should! And as an added bonus, Steven the Slime makes his debut!

[NYCC] Mario Kart 7 Hands-On Preview

Here’s Steven “DPX” trying out Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS. Unfortunately, it looks like our camera girl kinda borked the recording as it seems like she thought she was recording, when in fact she wasn’t. The demo was 3 races long. All that was recorded here was the last lap of the last race.

[NYCC] Pokemon Rumble Blast Hands-On Preview

Here comes the first wave of videos we’ve done over the weekend at New York Comic-Con. Many laughs, many woahs, and many hurt feet were had at the convention. But all was good. Here’s Suikoinfinity trying out Pokemon Rumble Blast.

Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 Phoenix Wright Trailer

For real this time. For a while I was wondering if Phoenix was really going to throw some punches and kicks. Turns out, he’s not quite doing much of that. Instead, he’s whipping out paper, throwing what looks like laser pens, calling out his assistant to do the Luigi Punches. I’m really diggin’ his level 1 Super though, calling out the Judge like a god! So far his fighting style is very different than the other fighters. He also has some icons over his super meter. Evidence perhaps? Hachi is definitely gonna love this!

Hachi76, Prota and Suikoinfinity of The Wired Fish are Going to New York Comic Con!

The Wired Fish: Finally the first thing to show up when you Google our Goddamn name!

Hello to all 30 The Wired Fish fans out there! This is Hachi with some good news: a few of us are going to Comic Con! Yes, your 3,897th favorite internet personalities will be attending New York Comic Con, at the Jacob Javits Center from October 14th-16th. Now, of course, we won’t be having a panel or anything (we’re not that popular…yet), but we will be wandering the Con floor. Prota and Suiko will likely be around the games most of the time, meanwhile I will be bumping around everywhere; games, anime, sales floor, you name it. Luckily, I’m also the most distinctive looking, and will be wearing my signature hat all three days.

What's sexier than a straw fedora? One with a little Hachi under it, that's what!

As for site news, me and Prota will be demoing any fun games we can find (especially Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Phoenix Wright all fucking day) so look out for the first installment of “Prota and Hachi do NYCC” (name subject to change to something less retarded) in the weeks after the con.

We don’t expect you to seek us out, of course, but if you happen to spot us, don’t be afraid to come over and say hi. It’ll boost our egos (and God knows, as a little hole in the wall site, we need it), we’ll probably exchange witty banter, and you can say you met a guy who writes on that one site you visited on the internet that one time! Everybody wins!

See you all there!
