Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena Screenshots

Ahem… I will hold back my inner fanboy squee in an effort to deliver quality journalistic coverage of Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena. If you didn’t see the news yesterday, Atlus announced that Persona was getting a fighting game. Today, they delivered some screenshots through Famitsu. We can see Arc System Works’ style shine through with crazy-flashy moves and colors. The visual elements of P3 and P4 lend themselves well in the transition from RPG to fighting game. So far, confirmed characters are Yu Narukami (or Hero on the Famitsu page), Chie Satonaka, and Yosuke Hanamura representing Persona 4, and Aigis representing Persona 3. In the screenshot above, we can also see that the protagonist from Persona 3 is in as well (it says Fool under his name), and Kanji is in as well (next to Chie). Still no word on characters from Persona and Persona 2 joining the fray. The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena is expected to be released on arcades on Spring 2012, with PS3 and 360 versions arriving that Summer. Screenshots after the break.

Atlus to make P4 for Vita and a Persona Fighting Gam–WAIT A PERSONA FIGHTING GAME!?

First, the smaller news. Atlus has announced that Persona 4 will be ported over to the Playstation Vita, following in its predecessor’s, footsteps (it being Persona 3 Portable). Under the name Persona 4: The Golden, it looks like it’ll retain everything the original PS2 version had (and not losing things like P3P). It will be gaining new features, including new animations, new opening, more voices, and a new character.

Now about that fighting game. Called Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena, the game takes place two years after the events of Persona 4. It will have characters from Persona 3 and 4 (no word on 1 and 2). So far we’re not sure if it’s canon or not, but this sounds awesome. Even better is that Arc System Works (the makers of BlazBlue) will be making the game. Now P3‘s MC can finally kick Mituru’s ass for gravely undermining her healing duties. It’s slated for release in arcades, then 360 and PS3 in 2012.

Finally, the staff has been assembled for Persona 5 and are ready to go.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Soundtrack Preview

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of the Ace Combat series. While I’ve never detailed the 5th and 6th entry in any way (and I really should, especially for 5), Each entry has had consistently good soundtracks. For Namco’s latest addition to the Ace Combat series, Assault Horizon, I’ll admit I was very concerned since every entry in the series (except for maybe the first one) took place in the fictional world of Strangereal.  This one takes place in our world and has your typical Russians and Middle Easterners as villains (where have I seen these roles before?). My concern over the story can be its own article, so let’s just talk music. So far, it seems like the music team is not letting the game’s real-world setting hamper its imagination, as each track still sounds like what you’d expect from Ace Combat. Track 2, 3, and 4 sound like oil refinery missions (ain’t no Ace Combat game complete without those). Track 5 – Spooky though brings back that epic Ace Combat feel that we know and love. Track 11 – Dogfight definitely sounds like a modern take on the Shattered Skies mission and song from Ace Combat 04. I’ll let you jusdge if the soundtrack’s sound good or not. Art of the Week: Feature 4 – robotpencil

You may have remembered some time last year that his artwork was featured on Kotaku. Well since then, robotpencil, real name Anthony Jones, has seen his popularity sky rocket and is reaping the benefits of his exposure since now he works at Sony Santa Monica. He is concept artist with them and is working on a few projects, including a graphic novel. His main base of operations is his website, but he is also on deviantART as well. What helped his popularity to grow was his interpretations of the Mario crew that the was shown in the initial Kotaku feature. It was reminiscent of the fan film There Will Be Brawl (and the movie that inspired it, There Will Be Blood). The manner in which he handled the subject matter made it stand out amongst other realistic reinterpretations of the Mario cast, in which a lot of them felt more like parodies of GTA that tried to hard, thus became distracting. Here, Mr. Jones interprets them in a manner that is believable. We can believe that Mario is a tough ol’ bastard, that Luigi is down on his luck, that Toad is a drug pusher, and that Peach has done more “work” outside being a princess. Many on dA are proud of what he has accomplished since his feature and wish him the best of luck.

Tribute to Satoshi Kon: Millenium Actress Review

One of the greatest minds in animation history right there...

“With my heart full of gratitude for everything good in the world, I’ll put down my pen. Well, I’ll be leaving now.”

– The last words of Satoshi Kon’s final address, posthumously posted on his blog by his family.

One year ago today, on August 24th 2010, the world of Anime lost one of its truly gifted and visionary creators when Satoshi Kon, the man behind such mind-bending works of art as Paranoia Agent and Perfect Blue, passed away at 47 after a mostly private battle with pancreatic cancer. He left behind a legion of mourning fans, instructions for the completion of his final film The Dreaming Machine, and a legacy of some of the most creative, wonderful, and boundry pushing animation ever put to film.

Anime Theater: Afro Samurai

Why do black guys always have such big swords?

In a world torn apart by violence, greed and death, one man wanders the desolate wastes on a mission of vengeance. His swordsmanship is unmatched by any of the hundreds who have challenged him, and his name is whispered fearfully in many a den of scum and villainy. Stopping nowhere, and proceeding ever onward toward his destination, his only companions are his sword and his fast talking counterpart. He is recognized by his dark skin, his cold, piercing eyes, and by his…gigantic black afro hairstyle, with a smidgen of green, of course.

Yup, that last part sure throws a wrench into things. Welcome to the world of Afro Samurai, where the baddies are brutal, the bitches are bangin’, and blood bathes the battlefield like a lackadasical hotel waitress spraying too much bleach on your end-table. The title alone seems too ludicrous to be accepted, and for a long time I myself had turned away from the show, expecting it to pander to the lowest common denominator. But if you look past the exploitative title, and are able to stomach a veritable cavalcade of sex and violence, then you will find an orgy of cool fights, cooler characters, great production values, and yes, even the occassional bit of depth.

Someone Finally Combined Phil Collins and Donkey Kong Country 2

Back around 2007, upon playing some Donkey Kong Country 2 on the Wii virtual console with my family (we never owned the game on the original SNES), my oldest sister tells me that “Bayou Boogie,” the swamp bgm, sounds like “In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins. So she plays video of the song on Youtube, and the similarity bitch-slapped my face raw. Go on videos for Bayou Boogie, and you’ll see comments comparing the song to “In The Air Tonight.” Well, on March 16, 2010, a Youtuber by the name of mx31619 made a mash-up of the two, and they fit like a hand in a mitten. But that’s not all. He even used the drums in Lockjaw’s Saga (around 3:02) and the synth of Mining Melancholy (3:44). By far this is the best mash-up of videogame music since Sonic and Kirby.

PS3 Cross-Game Chat Is Impossible Due To RAM Restrictions

Ouch… well, at least now we know the real reason Sony was so reluctant to include cross game chat in one of their updates. According to an interview Eurogamer had with Shuhei Yoshida, the Sony Worldwide Studios president admitted that the PS3 does not have enough ram to implement cross-game chat. The PS3 has 256MB of RAM each for the system and video, and all of it is used to run games. He states that the games themselves implement the voice chat feature, not the system. Because of the infrastructure of the PS3, and the possibility of alienating owners of newer PS3 models, Yoshida stated “It’s not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact.”

So there you have it. If you’re curious, the Vita has 512MB of RAM and 128MB of video RAM. So that little thing is quite a beast in that department.

Art of the Week: Feature 3 – vancamelot

This week we cover an artist that brings a smile to your face. vancamelot, real name Ivan Camelo, appeared on the scene around 2008, with his main base of operations being on deviantART. I first discovered vancamelot on the group Fighting-Game-Elite, where his artstyle caught my eye as I was clearing my message center. His style of art is very upbeat and could even be considered cute in some circles. His fanart covers properties including Marvel and DC Comics, Street Fighter, movies, and others like Gears of War as seen above. He uses simple shapes and proportions to build the images, almost like cutting construction paper. But he’s not afraid to get into detail, again, like the Gears of War image up there. Further perusing of his older artwork shows that he’s done other types of art as well, and may be tapping into elements of what he’s done then to use now. One striking image I found that I wish I could show here is one he did of Zero as a samurai. It’s amazing how he used the different patterns in the outfit he made for him.

Sonic Generations Trailer Shows More Stages, More Tails, + Mushroom Hill on 3DS

Here’s another new trailer for Sonic Generations, fresh off GamesCon in Germany. It shows of the usual stuff we’ve seen so far for this game. But it we see a new stage being shown off. From what it looks like, it’s the stage from Sonic 2006. Or it could be that stage from Sonic Unleashed. Not too sure as I try to stay the hell away from these games as much as I can. On the bright side of things, Tails shows up at the very end of the trailer. Not sure if there will be any two-player support akin to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but his appearance could spell constant death sounds behind you.

Yes, I did GO there: Hikaru no Go Review

I have never been into anime based on puzzle games, but that easily changed after finishing the series Hikaru no Go. The series starts with a simple concept. Hikaru finds an old Go board in his grandfather’s basement. When he finds the board, he notices blood on it but he is the only one that can see it. Sai, the androgynous ghost who resides in the board, arises from his rest and possesses Hikaru. After Sai explains why he possessed Hikaru and his mysterious past, he convinces Hikaru to play some Go. Hikaru takes Sai to a Go salon and plays another boy named Akira. Naturally, due to the guidance of Sai, Hikaru crushes Akira. Hikaru saying that his first time playing only furthers the plot. Akira trying to surpass Hikaru and figure out his mysterious strength, etc etc.

Now judging the series, solely on story line, isn’t fair when it comes to Hikaru no Go. I have watched this series twice in my lifetime. The first time, I was 13 and bored watching repeats on Toonami. The second time, I actually learned how to play Go before watching the series again. This made a world of difference and I suggest people follow my footsteps before watching the series. An understanding of Go, goes a long way. (<—see what I did there ^_^) Anime based on games/sport of any kind are usually hard to pull off and the audience usually needs understanding of the game/sport before really getting into the series. This is where Hikaru no Go really shines. Not only does the series do a good job explaining certain rules/elements of the game, but it also really puts perspective on the participants of this game. There are plenty of times, usually when Sai is teaching Hikaru a strategy, that the rules are explained in a simple and fun way. I found myself learning new things about Go by the third episode and I had been playing Go for about three months already.

Furthermore, at the end of each episode, more emphasis is put on GO and the community. The segment is called “GO! GO! IGOO!”. In this short two minute segment, being taught by real Go professionals, the series takes a Detective Conan puzzle approach. Different problems are given to the audience to solve by either next episode or the end of the segment. The cast even travels to different parts of Japan, China, and Korea to explore different Go communities around the world. This segment really got me into Go. Anyone giving the series a try will almost be forced to try the game at least once.

If I could compare the relationship of Hikaru and Sai to any other show, it would be a Zanpakto and a Shinagami without the blood and story inconsistency. Sai, in the beginning of the series, brought a lot of attention to Hikaru because he was playing based on Sai’s instructions. Hikaru naturally begins to learn the game and happens to be amazing at it. So the amount of games Hikaru gets to play start to change drastically. Naturally the relationship takes a hit and the characters bump heads. The thing that stood out to me most about this dynamic is that the relationship was very adult. No wimpy feelings, no crying, no inexplicable bitching. Both characters brought up logical points for how they felt. Not only did this dynamic exist between these two characters, but the whole cast. I concluded this was done purposely to give the audience an idea of how professional Go is handled. Hikaru may have been thirteen when he turned pro, but the world of Go was adult and he was treated as such. The series still has small humor bits and it is not always serious. The combination of these two elements makes the series a much watch for me.

Is there a flaw in the series? Yes. It has the same flaw as many series based on games or about detectives. The anime doesn’t spoon feed the audience every bit of information. Nothing is made apparent. The problem with this series and others, it isn’t flashy and will only grab a persons’ attention if they aren’t willing to give it up. For example, Bleach will can capture someones attention because of the weird looking monsters, hero with orange hair, and a giant sword or two. Compare that with an anime based on a strategy game that uses white and black stones……see what I mean? I personally don’t find this to be a flaw. But I also am a fan of many anime series that are known to do this: Monster, Detective Conan, etc.

This is a very good anime and should be watched for an enjoyment and educational reasons. Hikaru no Go is the full package when it comes to animation and voice acting, and goes above and beyond to make one of the oldest games ever created awesine. Long live Go and long live Hikaru no Go.

The Wheel of Fate continues to turn: A BlazBlue CS2 Review

The wheel of fates are turning again and I am loving it. If you own Blaze Blue Continuum Shift and did not download the patch, stop reading the article, run to your PS3 or Xbox 360 and download it…..NOW! If you ignored my instructions, have the patch already, or just plain don’t care, you may or may not understand how epic this patch is. The patch was released around the middle of May and I have been playing the game since. I play it mostly on the PSP but the changes are the same for next gen systems. I love some things about the patch (Tager buffs FTW 🙂 !) and some things I don’t like (the return of Jin Kisaragi and his icy stare). But overall, this patch proves how amazing Aksys is as a company. Not only did they use Dustloop forums as a reference for changes, they actually did a lot of things people liked. For example, the nerfs to Bang Shishigami. All fans of CS2 pre-patched remember the walking nightmare Bang was. He had no bad matchups, amazing priority, super armor on one of his best moves, and is A FREAKIN NINJA. But with the application of this patch, he isn’t as difficult to fight. Below is a combo video, by Diamondtifa, showing his amazing abilities pre patch.

Furthermore Aksys went above and beyond and made room for a new DLC character. His name is Relius Clover and he looks really cool. In the video below people describe him as a mixture of Carl and any random character from Jo Jo’s Bizzare adventure. I can’t wait to get my hands on the character and try some sick MVC3 like combos.

This will come up in a discussion somewhere on the interwebs, so I might as well bring it up now. Capcom Vs Atlus, Fate of two DLCs. Now my stance on this is very complicated, so I will try to make this as simple as possible. I am for the Atlus/ Netherealm games method for issuing out DLC. The user chooses what they want to buy. This method may not be as profitable as Capcom’s, but it definitely allows more control in the user’s hands. For example, if I didn’t want Relius Clover (highly unlikely), I wouldn’t have to patch my game. In Capcom’s case, they package Street Fighter 4 : Arcade Edition and Ultimate MVC3 user’s have to by characters they do/ don’t like just for a rebalance of the game. Recently a youtube who goes by the name AngryJoeshow made a rant about this same subject. He only addresses Ultimate MVC3 but it is still worth the watch:

With the application of this patch, it is clear how Aksys got to where they are today. Constant interaction with the community of people who love the game, patches that actually make the game better, and kept promises of future content. I know this review is short, but there is nothing more I can say about Aksys without making you guys think I am on payroll. If you don’t have BlazBlue Continuum Shift, go buy it. If you haven’t downloaded the patch, download it already. I am proud of Atlus and you should be as well.

Soul Calibur V Gets A New Trailer, and Some Character Reveals As Well

Elvis hair Maxi, bipolar Tira, chastity armor Hilda, and badass Mitsurugi make their debut in this latest trailer for Soul Calibur V. Voldo is also confirmed, but he (thankfully) is not present in the trailer. Right as the beginning, we can see that the development team’s “Project Soul” logo has a new look, so I guess they’re serious this time. After some brief cuts of some charters in their idle stances, we see the action. It looks largely the same as others in the series. But we do get glimpses of some of the characters Super Combo – like attacks, like Sigfried’s and Ivy’s. Soul Calibur V is scheduled for release next year.

Square Enix To Be Called Square…Just Square [Update]

Update: According to Dualshockers (via N4G), Square Enix has shot down rumors of rebranding, stating that both the Square Enix name and brand will remain as is. I’ll keep the original article up for your amusement.

Remember that epic merger that occurred at the turn of the millennium, where two of the largest rivals came together to become one Voltron of a conglomerate? If you say Nintendo and SEGA, give yourself a pat on the back ’cause that’s the wrong one. I’m of course talking about Squaresoft (Final Fantasy) and Enix (Dragon Quest) becoming Square Enix. Lots of things have happened since the merger, namely the departure of Squaresoft from EA, and the acquisition of Taito and Eidos, Well, since Square has more subsidiaries under its belt, having the name “Square Enix” is making less of an impact. And being called Square-Enix-Taito-Eidos is out of the question. So, according to a recent article by GotGame, Square Enix will be changing its name to Square in what may be an attempt to create a central family name, like Rockstar and all the other Rockstar branches. To some, this may bring back memories of old Square from the NES and SNES days. But this today’s Square is different from yesterday’s Square. We shall see if Square regains any of that old time quality with this re-branding.
